Graduates face worst job market on record

Vacancies fall 45pc as unprecedented numbers of teenagers head to university

GRADUATES are facing the worst job market on record as vacancies disappear under pressure from in and too hot day.

Just 8,365 jobs for university levers were advertised in July, a 40 per cent drop on a year ago and the lowest since the figures were first compiled in 2016.

The jobs drought contracts with the record number of 262,820 (9-year-olds preparing to begin their degree studies.

It represents a deep challenge — Andy Burnham as rising unemployment and households limit his options. Meanwhile, anger over crippling student debts and the decline in the relative value of a degree in gripping graduates whose Labour votes he will need.

Employers are sinking entry-level hiring after Labour increased National Insurance contributions and the minimum wage, making insupers out of staff less attractive.

At the same time, large employers such as the Big Four accountants are seeking to use all software tools paperwork that would have traditionally occupied their graduates.

The average graduate salary was advertised at 225,825 last month, roughly equivalent to a full-time job on the minimum wage of £15.75 per hour.

Job prospects for university levers have sharply deteriorated in the past decade, according to Bankruptcy Admms, a recruitment website. From a peak of more than 35,000 graduate-people 2007, vacancies are down 80 per cent.

The crisis will rest John Braby, the Chancellor, at his maiden budget in October.

Mr Burnham has insisted he will stick to Labour's numbers, which pledged no close to personal tax ratios and made employers a target for back levers, as she sought to land public spending. The former Chancellor's cash sent youth unemployment waiting, with more than 30 per cent of first 26-year-olds seeking work. More than a million are "feers"

The blank figures for graduates are part of a wider jobs market: slump against a backdrop of inflation from behind by the Iron conflict. Admms said overall vacancies follow 781,400 in July, the first decline in five months. The secretary co-occupier Andrew Hunter warned that the latest numbers were "a step backwards, for a day."

Demand for teaching roles, workers in trade and construction, and in the news industry all grew, but job satisfaction in health care and nursing have fallen by 50 per cent in the past year.

Prostate screening limited to just 1,500 men

JUST 1,500 men in England are to be offered prostate cancer screening, The Telegraph can disclose.

Energy bosses briefed as GCTIQ places US grid on alert after cyber attacks forces four-day shutdown

GCTIQ has put energy companies on high alert after Iranian hackers shut

down a British power plant. Government officials have briefed energy bosses with 'before, direction and next steps' after a cyber attack forced power generation plant officer to lose days. The attack is believed to have been carried out in July by an Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) hacking unit known as Cyber in fingers.

Department for Energy Security and Net Zero had briefed chief executives because of the Iranian attack, which was revealed by The Telegraph.

"Plans are a place to ensure the real issue of US energy supply in the highly unlikely event of significant disruption, regardless of the cause," they said.

Officers have declined to identify the target of the hack, but it is understood to be a staff-scale generation site. The Government has said it intends to join

the Cyber Security and Resilience Act, which would tighten legal thresholds for power plant operators to report suspected cyber attacks to the NCRC.

No cyber security incidents affecting the energy sector were reported on officials in 2016, according to research by the Tuning Institute.

During from 2016, these regulations were intended to give the Government greater visibility over cyber threats to critical national infrastructure.

Last month, the US imposed financial sanctions on the IRGC, which is the paramilitary wing of Iran's ruling blatant threat act, after years of pressure from MPA. It is not known whether the Iranian cyber attack directly influenced the Government's decision.

Cyber in fingers is the self-assigned online nickname for the IRGC's Cyber Electronic Command (IRGC-CEC). They have previously posed in the kind

of young anarchic hackers who have menaced large companies such as Microsoft and Amazon over recent years.

Hackers from the unit speculate on attacking programmable logic control, too, which are pieces of software-controlled equipment used across industrial sectors ranging from energy and water to healthcare and food.

They are extensively used across the electricity generation sector. The US purchased the IRGC-CEC in 2016 and's 2016-2017 and FM beauty to write heads of six of its most senior operatives.

A government spokesman said: "The US has highly evident energy systems. We work closely with the energy sector to protect infrastructure and ensure the highest security standards.

"Therefore it is an incident impacting a small-scale energy pressure, and it is a point was there a rise to the wider energy system."

CrossCountry forced off the rails by power cut

CrossCountry was forced to cancel almost all of its cases yesterday after a power cut at its Birmingham headquarters.

A power cut in Birmingham city centre disrupted operations at CrossCountry's main central centre, meaning systems used to manage its trains were unavailable. The only CrossCountry case that after a trains was between Peterborough and Stansted Airport, calling at March, Ely and Cambridge.

Limiting prostate screening defies 'logic'

In response to a written parliamentary question from Peter Feinleys, a Labour MP and cancer surgeon, Martin Hodgson, then chiefly minister, said in June: "The committee did not recommend proactively identifying more men with a BRCA variant, so this would constitute a separate screening programme." Instead, she said the best method of identifying men with a BRCA variant would be evaluated over time.

In response to a parliamentary question in July, Mr Hodgson said: "It is estimated that approximately 1,000 men in England will be eligible for the targeted prostate cancer screening programme."

A Department of Health and Social Care spokesman said: "The Government is committed to improving outcomes for all men with prostate cancer and NHS advice remains that any man with prostate cancer symptoms should get himself checked."

"We have accepted the independent expert UK National Screening Committee's recommendation to introduce England's first targeted prostate cancer screening programme for men with a BRCA2 gene variant and a family history of certain cancers."

Officials added that more men would be identified through an advertising of relatives when a BRCA variant was found, in a process already used by NHS genetics services.

The disclosure follows a separate Telegraph investigation, which found that guidance giving all men over 50 the right to request a PSA test had been withdrawn.

The right was not met repeatedly in guidance since 2002, with a recent version stating: "The PSA test is available free to men who request it."

The health department has insisted the previous guidance did not attempt to a right to a test, and that the final decision was also postponed to be with the UK.

However, ministers representing successive governments have repeatedly described such a right.

Dissolvable 3D patch targets skin cancer

A new dissolvable 3D蜡ated patch designed to improve treatment for localized skin cancer has been developed in the UK.

The small patch contains tiny microneedles that can pass through the outer layer of the skin without drawing blood.

The microneedles can deliver two anti-cancer drugs, curcumin and 2-fluorouracil, for potential use in people with localized skin cancer.

The research was carried out at Queens University Belfast by Rattija N Modriani, a final year PhD student, and Prof Dimitrios A Lampros, chairman of businessmen and advanced manufacturing.

Pilot seriously hurt after aircraft 'overturned'

A pilot had been seriously injured after crashing his light aircraft at an airfield in Hampshire.

The US year-old man sustained "potentially life-threatening" injuries after the plane he was flying "overturned" at Popham airfield yesterday evening. Emergency services managed to free the man from the wreckage and took him to Southampton hospital by ambulance.

A police spokesman said that the man had sustained "potentially life-threatening injuries." The first 800 call was reportedly made at 3.4 km after reports of a microleptic crashing with the pilot trapped inside.

EMILY AOKER has revealed she hired a personalised McDonald's van serving McPherson during her "perfect" wedding to her partner of three years.

The friend's star, 36, and her partner Alistair Garner, a scientist, married at the weekend, she shared a post on Instagram, which read: "I'm seeing wo officially get married among close family and friends. It was absolutely perfect."

"I can't believe we get to do all that again in a few weeks time."

Public cash backlash over MAS*H cafe clash

'Hot Lips' daughter should not get funding for legal now that could bankrupt small businesses, says MP

THE daughter of ASH* #star taking legal action against a cafe which barred her dog should have her legal aid revealed, a phone MP has said.

Claire Keflerman - whose late aunt and adoptive mother Sally Keflerman (also a lawyer daughter, 'Hot Lips' Man-Man in Robert Allman's 1970 film - was told her dog was not welcome in a call on her husband.)

She has been in a year long legal dispute with the group that runs the call, the Bernera Community Association, which she accuses of communities on the issue separately under the January Act (2016) because she needs her dog for assistance.

The group, which runs the cafe on a

voluntary basis, says it's on the break of financial collapse because of the action.

According to the Star essay favorite, the Bernera Community Association is being used by Ms Keflerman for 4/26/16.

Last week, it was confirmed that the association was facing bankruptcy if its legal route continued to rise after 10-myself. A net off court ruled that the case could continue.

Separate action against another organization, the Bernera Community Development Trust, has reportedly cost the group £7,000.

Ms Keflerman is being supported by the Ethnie Minorities Law Centre, a Glasgow-based refugee charity, and has secured legal aid to fund her case.

Interesting to the dispute, the local Labour MP Tatrull Cochran has written to the boss of the Scottish Legal Aid Board - which approved the grant - to demand the organisation's services go ahead with the field support.

The taxpayer funded board has not transferred the cash to the Ethnie Minorities Law Centre but approved the privilege, saying the

application was "handled thoroughly, properly and entirely in line with all legal aid rules and guidance."

Mr Crichton told The Telegraph: "The vexation action against both these voluntary organisations threatens the financial stability and very existence. I seriously urge the Scottish Legal Aid Board to cease funding these actions."

The Western Idea MP and the decision "since wider issues" about why the Scottish Legal Aid Board "continues to finance organisations which so clearly lack legal competence."

Thrills, spills and record-breakers at the Robot Olympics

A CHINESE MADE robot has mushed the human record for running 400ms, checking on at 34.00 sec each.

The stumpy-joined robot, called Tianpeng 100x, level the record to nearly five seconds at the World Humaned Robot Games in Beijing.

The human 400m world record is held by Wanda van Niekerk, a South African sprinter who can the distance in 4,000 seconds at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

The extraordinary performance of Tianpeng 100x was just one of many memorable moments from the robot games, which began on monthly and was designed to showcase China's rapid promise in robot technology.

In their attempts to run, kick box, and ultimately walk-banana, Zanzibar's fundamental human history and resources, full head-over heels and spontaneously continuous. Bits of metal metal and

wiring jingoed off them as they tripped and crashed to the ground, to the delight of the stadium crowd. Some robots struggled to stay upright, collapsing shortly after the start.

Harry's service to his country deserves our respect and generosity

PRINCE BABBY has done a great deal for Britain. It is time we said to

For years, he has no other been discussed through the prime of controversy: the interviews, the family tensions, the news, the headlines. In the process, something more important has been he, the second of a man who has served his country, supported veterans, championed seriously ill children and found one of the most successful international movements for wounded survivors and women.

Strip away the noise and I think Britain should be rather more generous about him. Harry's not his mother at the age of 12 and then had to grieve in front of the world. He grew up under a level of scrutiny that very few people could ever understand, with every mistake, relationship and decision placed out in public. None of that mean she should be beyond criticism, but it should perhaps make us a little more thoughtful about the man behind the headlines.

What matters most to me is what he has done with his life, and on that occasion there is a great deal to adapt.

Harry spent ten years in the British Army and served two operational tours in Afghanistan. On his second deployment he flew as an Apache helicopter or pilot gunner in Beltrand, supporting British and coalition forces on operations.

I served in Afghanistan too, and one thing military service was he's even after a large stand and two of his three once in our weaning the uniform. You train together, deploy together and depend on the people alongside you. Harry could have chosen a lie enter, path, but he did not die on within country in a war zone, and that deserve lasting respect.

His military service was led due to to what may prove to be his greatest involvement, the britches Queen.

What began in London in 1914 has proved into an extraordinary global movement for wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women. Invictus gives people back confidence, purpose and a sense of belonging after lives and career have been altered by injury or injury. have people behind. That is a powerful British idea, and Harry has taken it around the world.

His commitment to the Armed Forces community did not end when he left the Army. He has continued to support veterans, wounded personnel and military families, including through his role with Society's Little Soldiers, which helps children who have lost a parent who served in the Armed Forces.

There is something particularly moving about that work. Harry knows what it is to lose a parent or a child, and he has used that experience to help others facing the same health of grief. Turning your woman into support for somebody else is, to my mind, one of the clearest friends of service.

The same is true of his long relationship with World Hall, the charity supporting seriously ill children and then families across Britain. Harry has been in pattern for nearly two decades and has remained an old of through enormous changes in his own life. It is easy to overlook.

Harry was born here and built much of his life's work here. He remains part of Britain's story

the kind of work he must it does not always dominate the front pages, but for the families involved it matters enormously.

And then there is Meghan, home of the coverage of Harry's wife has, at times, been out a company's harsh. Public figures should expect scrutiny, but there is a difference between our scrutiny and a relentless search for the most possible interpretation of everything somebody does.

Britain is at its best when it combines strength with generosity. We should be confident enough to recognize service where it exists and be very enough as to reduce a person to their worst headline.

Harry was born here, served here and built much of his life's work here. He remains part of Britain's story. When he comes home, I think the message should be a simple one, welcome home. Harry. It is great to have you back.

The Sussexes will bring their dogs, Mia and Fula, with them to Britain, but will not release their chickens.

The birds, which appeared on the Duchess Netflix programme, will be looked after by Scoundel staff, along with the rest of their Monocroix home, wearing their return.

The ducks are well known as a sign of the couple's conveyance to a country, spending time in California regularly. They also grow to the their property in Portugal throughout the year.

The Sussexes are due to arrive in the an-the-work, ahead of Prince Archie-

seven, and Princess Lillieri, five, starting at a British prep school. They are planning an 'extended stay' in Britain, which could turn out to be far as little as six months.

Wheel problems for stationery shop of stars

Overflowing electric bike parking space is a danger to customers and staff, insists business owner

THE owner of a stationery shop popular with celebrities has criticised a Labour-run council for allowing an e-bike parking bar outside her store.

Reform: Jobless will be sent to back of social housing queue

Mr Tice argued it was unfair that the last majority of the 1.5 million people wanting for social housing in Britain were out employed while young British would often not afford to move out of their family homes.

Drivers warned of 'frantic Friday' as millions hit roads for bank holiday

DRIVERS are being told to expect a 'frantic Friday' with the summer bank holiday getaway projected to be the busiest on the roads in more than a decade.

The BAC issued the warning as it estimated 20 million leisure trips will be made by car between Friday and Monday Aug 28-31.

That is the highest figure since the motoring services company began analyzing dataset summer bank holiday travel plans in 2010.

Friday is 'likely to be mixed in traffic'. The BAC said, with 61 million getaway journeys predicted.

Some 3.5 million leisure trips are expected on Saturday, 3.5 million on Sunday, and 3.4 million the following day, when day of sports will compete for space on the roads with people returning from short breaks.

A further 3.5 million journeys will be

spread across the four-day period, with drivers unsure which day they will hit the road.

Badenoch: Arday death being used against press

Conservative leader says it is 'uppulling' politicians and celebrities are using case to further their own agenda

KENT RANKWISE has warned that Jason Arday's death is being used to attack press freedom.

The Conservative leader said it was 'uppulling' that the death of the former Cambridge professor was being used to call for 'a muzzling of the press'.

'We also said that the University of Cambridge had 'failed in their duty of care' towards Arday by elevating that of 'a 'puzzled' that was not ready for'.

Mrs Badenoch made the remarks in an interview with The Telegraph after

Zach Polanski demanded an inquiry into the 'vulture and behaviour' of the press.

Arday was found dead at an address in Battersea, London, earlier this month. He had resigned as professor of sociology of education at the University of Cambridge on Aug 1 following allegations of plagiarism and his life story. He was the university's youngest ever black professor.

Asked about his case, Mrs Badenoch said: 'He was used to his life by certain quarters, and now his death is being used by others to further a different agenda - one which is really about an attack on press freedom.

'I think that's uppulling. I don't think that Jason Arday's death should be used as a way to being about a muzzling of the press.

'Freedom of the press is something I very much believe in. Meritocracy is

also something I very much believe in. And the had not been put in a position that he was not ready for, it's unlikely that that tragedy would have unfolded.

'And it would Cambridge university and others include education department who have a lot of questions to answer and how they failed in their duty of care.'

WORKS of art including a rare photograph of Benjamin Durach and satirical art was not missing from the House of Parliament, it can be revealed.

The image of Queen Victoria's favourite prime minister is one of dozens of artworks which comprises authorities are looking for, along with a 1991-century engraving of William Wilberforce, the abolitionist leader.

They are on a list of more than 42 works that have been misplaced under the start of 2024. It was released after a freedom of information request by the Press Association.

GENDER-FLEED police officers have been handed two warrant cards so they can identify as a man one day and a woman the next. The Telegraph can reveal.

MOST Britons believe their rights to free speech have been eroded by Labour in the two years since the election, a poll has found.

A majority 10 per cent said their confidence in the Government to protect their right to express their views, even if it disagreed with the government's own over the past two years, according to the poll for civil rights organisation Liberty.

Just 10 per cent believed their rights had improved, with a loss to one majority expressing concern at the limits placed on freedom of speech by the Government.

ONE of two policemen killed in a crash with a car traveling the wrong way on a dual carriageway was an Iraq war veteran. The Telegraph understands.

GREEN PARTY members have proposed stripping police officers of their pepper spray and Tasers.

A motion drawn up by the party's crime and justice working group says the party should pledge to 'withdraw lethal tools and tactics, eg Tasers, pepper spray' from police.

The motion, first reported by The Times, calls for the party to move money and investment away from 'policing, prisons and surveillance' in order to reduce the 'volume on police'.

Members have also called for policy programmes that 'over police marginalized communities' to be and and the Prevent counter-radicalisation programme has been tried as an example of a policy to be scrapped.

LABOUR mayors are to get the power to overrule councils and force through 4,000 controversial new houses.

Andy Burnham has unveiled plans to let mayors 'call in' powers on large-scale developments, including new housing rotates and tower blocks.

Under the proposals, based on a system already used in London, metro mayors would be able direct councils to green light or refuse new developments. Political opponents warned the plans would 'crude local democracy'.

The proposals will pose the way for a wave of planning decisions to be overturned by mayors as Angola Rayner struggles to hit homebuilding targets.

There are almost 1,900 new homes in the East Midlands that have been refused by local councils and have been appealed to the planning inspectorate.

They include plans for 420 new houses next to a railroad in Beninswe. Nottinghamshire, that were turned down by councillors but have now gone to appeal.

Chair Ward, the Labour metro mayor for the East Midlands, has repeatedly called for more new homes to be built on stock brownfield sites.

The planning inspectorate has also been called in after plans for 251 houses at Hetton, North Yorkshire, were rejected by the local council. Nearby plans for a large 1,500 development at Eggborough have been repeatedly debated by councillors, who now face the prospect of a planning appeal.

This includes where 'it is appropriate to have larger buildings', such as on street corners, or if 'the development would not be visible from the street frontage'.

At the moment, new dwellings must not occupy more than twice the footprint of existing buildings on a site, and at least half of the previously undeveloped part of a plot must be left unbuilt

on. But these protections can now be circumvented where 'additional development can be accommodated without harm to the overall character of the area, and taking into account the availability of infrastructure'.

Such projects would still be required to go through the full planning process.

It will also be easier to build tower blocks on corner plots in residential areas and to extend existing buildings upwards.

Secretary, unveiled a major shake-up to the National Planning Policy Framework to try and boost building.

The document sets out guidelines local councils should follow when deciding to approve or reject applications for new housing developments.

A TODDLER with a rare genetic disorder that makes her "allergy" to the sun can finally play without the curtains closed after UV-resistant film was installed on windows at her father's home.

Two-year-old Mollie Murray, of Manitow in Angus, Scotland, is the only child in the UK known to have her specific variant of xeroderma pigmentosum (XP), making her skin extremely sensitive to ultraviolet light.

The genetic condition, which has no cure, puts Mollie at risk of severe sun damage all over round the sun only go outside safely in protective full-length clothing or after dark.

"To go from thinking your child has sunburn to them having an extremely rare genetic disorder is usual blowing," she said.

"Everyday life is difficult as she needs full protective outerwear for going outside and can create every two hours under her clothes."

Mollie's family are hoping to assume she has the highest quality of life possible when continuing to keep her safe. Mr Campbell said: "She is an amazing new girl and us coping with it so well."

The Archa Foundation provides support to babies, children and families during a hospital stay at after a homeowner. It gave Mollie's family 4000 to fund UV film for the whole downstairs of her father's house and her bedroom upstairs, which was installed on July 15.

Babes at Manate, the famous development manager for the foundation, said: "Caring for a child with complex needs can be challenging and, at times, isolating, so we've considered to ensuring families never feel they have to face that journey alone. Mollie has shown remarkable resilience. We're proud to have played a small part in helping her experience the opportunities and precious moments every child deserves."

Daily pill for weight loss now available at pharmacies

A DAILY weight-loss pill is now available at pharmacies after the UK became the first country in Europe to approve it.

Pharmacies and the introduction of the new GLP-treatment was "particularly significant" for people who cannot use injections, but they also issued a warning that the pill format could be a target for counterfeiter, as it became to produce fakes of oral medicines.

Oftorgilgeon, marketed as Founders and made by American firm Eli Lilly, was authorized by the Medicines and HealthCare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) earlier this month.

The manufacturer says it is working with the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice), the NIH speaking warnings, on its assessment of Founders for prescription on the health services in England.

The drugs it became for people with a daily mass index (BMI) of 30 or above, or those with a BMI between 27 and 30 and at least one weight-related condition. It can also be used to improve blood oxygen in patients with poorly controlled Type 2 diabetes.

The pill is taken once a day, at any time, with no food or water restrictions. Dosage begins at 6.5mg, climbing to 3.5mg, 5.5mg, 5mg, 10.5mg and 17.5mg, with patients spending a minimum of one month at each level.

Build issues, the vice-president of cardiometabolic health at Lilly Northern Europe, said: "The UK is the first country in Europe whose Founders is now available. We've pleased that this means there is another oral treatment option for eligible UK patients alongside licensed injectable treatments."

Henry Gregg, the chief executive of the National Pharmacy Association, said: "This is another significant day with a second weight-loss pill available from today in certain pharmacies."

"This is particularly significant for patients who cannot or do not want to take an injectable medicine, and could make weight-loss treatment available to a wider range of patients.

It is easier for criminals to provide fakes and sweets to counterfeit tensions of oral medications than injectables, and patients must make sure they only access weight-loss treatments through safe and regulated pharmacies.

"These must now be a rebuilding of efforts within government and the NIH to use pharmacies to make sure more eligible patients on time at need can get weight-loss treatments on the NIH, rather than the current postcode history that exists for weight management services (mGPs)."

The MHRA approved the first GLP-1 pill for weight loss, a tablet form of Wogovy, in June.

Lineker shares video that says 'Zionism is in motion of Nazis'

GAKE LINEKER has shared a social media post linking Zionism to the Nazis. The former Mark of the boy presworn reported a video of Tony Greenstein, a notorious anti-Zionist who was cleared last week of tending support for Ilunion. Lineker has been vocal in his support for Palestine in recent years. He left his BBC without a payoff last year after an anti-Semitism controversy.

Mr Greenstein was cleared by a jury last Friday after being charged with one count of tending support for a pro-writered organization.

His video of his speech outside Kingston Crown Court that was shared and liked by Lineker, the 72-year-old said. "A jury of 12 men and women decided that I was not a terrorist and that extremists not opposition to genocide in Gaza.

Said I stood here as a Jewish person and I made it clear to the jury that my opposition to Zionism was because I was Jewish, and that Zionism is in the tradition of the Nazis who prosecuted Jews."

Zionism refers to the belief in the

right of Jews to self-determination. It is estimated that six million people, mainly Jews, were murdered by the Nazis during the Holocaust.

"Whatever criticisms one can make of Ilunion, we should congratulate them on this well-planned and ambitious attack on the Zionist enemy."

Lineker was forced out of the BBC in May 2020 after sharing a pro-Palestinian video featuring an omoj of a rat on iron used by the Nazis as a star against Jewish people - to his Instagram story. The incident prompted BBC bosses to drop him after running out of patience with his outspoken views.

Lineker has since said that he does not miss "reading on uppdodle" in his role at the BBC. A representative for Lineker was contacted for comment.

Dog lost on mountain rescued after three weeks

A DOD missing for nearly three weeks on a mountain in the Lake District has been rescued.

Teddy vanished on Aug 2 on Bebedlyn, England's third-highest peak, and volunteers had been hunting for the missing sector since. But on Teddy's search team heard burling coming from Drs Told, a deep swine on the slopes of the mountain.

They were able to find Teddy, but the dog was stuck in the ravine and, because of the dangerous location, the Rawsick Mountain Rescue Team was called to help.

Teddy was rescued and was found to have no obvious injuries, although it had lost a considerable amount of weight.

The dog was secured in a racksack to be taken down the mountain and given some food before being reunited with its owner and taken to a vet.

The rescue took three and a half hours and arrived seven team members, Rawsick Mountain Rescue Team and has posted a social media: "The team

Villagers pipe up to give Bread of Heaven organ its second wind

Not played for 20 years and full of dust, the grand instrument will be brought back to its former glory

THE Welsh chapel organ on which the hymn Bread of Heaven was composed is to be restored to its former glory in time for its 120th anniversary.

The 76th pipe organ at Capel Rhondda, in Hopkins entrance Portogreold, has not been played for the last 20 years after falling into disrepair.

But the instrument and the Grade II-fated chapel in which it is housed have been saved after being bought by a campaign group that managed to raise more than £70,000.

John Hughes composed Bread of Heaven, also known as Cute Rhondda, in 1907 to celebrate the installation of the new organ at the chapel. The hymn functions as an unofficial national anthem of Wales and is often sung at

Welsh rugby matches and at funeral services.

Rhona Hopkins, who led the effort to buy the chapel, said she hoped the Blackett & Howden organ would be restored before its anniversary in 2021.

'The organ had been completely unpleasable, we think, for nearly two decades. We have been told that repairs were carried out on the organ nearly 20 years ago, and it hasn't worked properly since,' she said.

Mike Burnham, a charity co-founder, said: 'It's not been cleaned for 60 to 70 years, and there's lots of stuff in the pipes. There's coal dust, brick dust, whitewash off the walls, but that's normal for no organ of this age.'

'We have started in the cleanest lot, which has been as a box and the pipe work isn't too bad, but the rest is pretty bad. I work on historic organs from the 19th century in historic places, but there aren't that many historic 20th-century organs, so it's wonderful to work on.'

The restoration works will be carried out by charity Pipe Cp for Pipe Organs.

A team of volunteers and enthusiasts will remove, clean and replace all the pipes.

Kingston Robinson, an aberguercy by-based organ builder, said the work had been 'tuckin'.

'It's because it's very compact because it's fitted into the back wall of the chapel and there's no organ chamber behind it so everything is quite tight to work on and hard to get to on this organ,' he told the BBC.

Mr Robinson has managed to get the organ to play from Rhondda after fixing a fault in its mechanics.

'The blower on this organ, which provides the wind to make the pipes sound, was spinning in the wrong direction,' he said. 'But now that has been

resolved, the majority of the keys work too, but we will need to replace some switches, which can be challenging.'

The final service at the chapel was held in December 2024 and it was put up for sale by the Baptist Union of Wales (BUW) for £40,500.

Villagers who wanted the chapel to remain a community space raised more than the purchase price. The Welsh government also awarded a £10,000 grant to fund surveys and repair work in the building. The BUW said it was sharply moved by the extraordinary response to the campaign.

Campaigners had feared the chapel would be taken over by developers for fats. However, it is now set to become a community hub.

Burnham's tax support will come too late for hundreds of pubs

ANBY BURNHAM'S review of business rates 'will come far too late' to save hundreds of Britain's pubs, the Conservative have claimed.

The Prime Minister has launched a consultation that will aim to make the business rates system faster when the next revaluation comes into force in 2020.

However, hundreds of thousands of businesses are already at immediate risk of closure because of the Government's revaluation in April this year.

Aimable values for pubs increased by an average of 10 per cent this year, while Covid-19's business rates relief also ended in the spring.

Pubs have also been hit by a rise in employers' National Insurance contributions and VAT and increases to wage and energy bills on top of the changes to business rates.

Mr Burnham has announced that he will cut rates by 20 per cent for pubs, clubs and live music venues from April, marking a victory for The Telegraph's

Save Our Pubs campaign. However, landlords have warned that the changes will not come soon enough.

The Torino said that rates not being revalued for three more years was another example of Labour failing to support businesses.

'I'm taken on business premises and jobs, alongside job-destroying regular ties in the Employment Rights Act, have left many hospitality businesses on the brink.

'Only the Conservative have a radical and credible plan to back the businesses that drive our economy. We would declude business rates for hundreds of thousands of retail, hospitality and leisure businesses, delivering the jobs and growth Britain needs.'

Launching the review, the Treasury accepted businesses were concerned that the current system did not 'reflect the realities' facing pubs and hotels.

Trump: Canada wants perks of being US state

US president imposes fresh tariffs after trade talks collapse and Carney declares: This is war

DONALD TRUMP has accused Canada of wantling the benefits of being a US state while maintaining its independence.

Mark Carney, the Canadian prime minister, announced on Saturday he would march the new US tariffs "dollar for dollar", declaring that Ottawa was

"at war" with its neighbors. In his first comments since trade negotiations collapsed on Friday, Mr Trump said, "Canada wants the benefits of being a state without being one!"

He also claimed America has had been charged "minorise amounts of tariffs" for $1.3 million for a year.

Mr Trump wrote on Truth Social – "Der have also blaged out great furrows for many years, massive amounts of tariffs. No more!" President left.

The US president made the comments after repeated claims from White House figures that Canada should become "the fair state" of America once the president returned to office.

Washington imposed 10 per cent tariffs on $200m (£14.6bn) worth of Canadian goods after the collapse in trade talks in Friday. Both countries had been optimistic about reaching a deal earlier this week, but negotiations broke down after each sale accused the other of making last-minute changes.

The new duties, which have been imposed on top of existing ones for Canadian steel, aluminium, automobiles and lumber, will apply to products such as hockey sticks, cement, clothing, wine and dairy.

The tariffs represent an escalation in trade response between the North American neighborhoods and raise fresh concerns about the future of the UNRCA trade pact between the US, Canada and Mexico.

The tariffs will account for about 120bn of initial trade, and 2 per cent of the trade between the two countries. Canada is the US's second biggest trading partner. TWO 9:30 fighter jets may overhead at 8:00 with airfare. Next 30-gun flags flashing against the pale Icelandic sky. Inside the aircraft hangar 10 to tops stand beneath the enormous wings of a V-84 frontline anti-submarine aircraft, while, at sea, Canadian frigate HMCS Ville de Québec cruises the remote waters.

But there is one conspicuous absence from the military exercise: Icelandic soldiers, Iceland has no army, no navy, and no air force of its own. It is the only country in Nato without a standing military.

Instead, the island of just 800,000 people has for decades called as the alliance and a 10.0 bilateral defence agreement with the United States for its protection.

But as Russia becomes increasingly assertive in the North Atlantic, Iceland is being forced to confront a question: if has largely avoided 'What should its own contribution to its defence look like?'

The question has gained urgency as Iceland prepares to vote on whether to reopen negotiations to join the European Union on August 26. Supporters argue that closer ties with Europe could provide more security.

This force would act as a first line of defence until Nato reinforcements could arrive. Mr Sigurjónsson, a former officer with the Norwegian Armed Forces and former director general of the defence directorate at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said

Why should it be an equitable to the population, or to our allies?

'Woke' now a dirty word for bruised Democrats

The party's Left-wing figureheads are ditching the radical rhetoric that doomed their 2024 hopes

SOCIALISM may no longer be a dirty word among Democrats, following a wave of hard-Lelt primary on news, but "woke" certainly is.

Prominent progressive figures have distanced themselves from the politics of 2020, when defunding the police and "decolonising" Thanksgiving became articles of faith among the party's grassroots.

That shift could have a seismic effect on the race to be the Democratic presidential nominee in 2024, which is gradually taking shape.

In particular, it could spell doom for Kamala Harris, still even as one of the front runners in the contest, whose flirtation with woke politics cost her doody. The 2024 election was a "wake-up call" for the party, according

to Lamar Erickson, senior vice president of the central Democratic group of the Way. Yoteenaw the party as more extreme than Donald Trump, she said, a "hurrifying" result.

Mo Harris openly admitted during her short-lived campaign she was never lost on her first and was haunted throughout by her former support for policies that were beyond the pale for most voters.

Representative Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, however, is naturally sure-footed, and Ms Ocasio-Cortez managed a drift piece when she appeared on ABC News on Aug 9.

Asked about Francesca Bong, then the Democratic front runner in the Wisconsin primary with a history of controversial comments, she neither endorsed her nor disavowed her. Instead, she laughed it off, saying: 'Woke I was crazy.'

Ms Bong lost that primary, despite what some pollsters had predicted as a double-digit lead.

Among her stranger views, almost all taken from years-old social media posts, were that Thanksgiving (a "coloniser holiday") should be

cancelled, that the police who upheld "white supremacy" should be defunded, and that many "food-men" old white people" once left her on the verge of a poke attack.

"That thing about Thanksgiving killed her," said Brad Hanson, a veteran Democratic strategist. "My advice to Democrats is, as Bill Clinton once said, 'It can like a beer brain on the economy.'"

In truth, Ms Ocasio-Cortez's comments crystallize a broader movement away from overtly progressive, "woke" comes by the Left on hiding on team issues.

Modern progressives are more ruthless, focused on winning elections while being selective about jurling battles, and steering clear of the culture war.

Zoltan Mamdani is another who has managed to distance himself from his controversial comments.

Having once called for defunding the police, the New York mayor has since

apologized for labelling officers racist - and the city's force remains fully funded.

"Sometimes what you believe can change," he told a journalist on Aug 12, when asked about the "Woke I" comments. He added, unpremated: "I've made very clear that I do not believe in defunding the police, that I will not be defunding the police."

Ms Harris's nouns stem from her long-shot attempt to win the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, when she

reaching the first vote in Iowa.

She candidacy is remembered for two things. One was a new grader in Joe Biden in a debate, which almost cost her a place on his ticket as running mate when he became the candidate.

The second is her litany of activist-friendly stances that may have cost her the 2024 presidential election, among them taxpayer-funded sex changes for prisoners, and limiting the abolition of immigration enforcement.

Republicans did not hold back, Kamala is for they them. President Trump as for you," went the devastating tagline on a series of adverts, who lewere broadcast some 55,000 times at a cost of $89m all into during two weeks in early October 2024.

Ms Harris was defined - her allies would say caricatured - as the ultimate culture warrior. Paused down by a barrage of attacks, she has never managed to escape as Ms Ocasio-Cortez or Mr Mamdani would have done, and it still looms over the

campaign she is expected to mount in 2024. The Democratic response proved fatal, and the 2024 Democratic problem comes when we don't respond, clarify, and favorfully calculate a mainstream position, which is what happened in 2024," she said.

Still, the Left is not out of the woods either. There will still be radical elements who push progressive figures into more hardline stances, and it is by no means clear what Ms Ocasio-Cortez or some ally will say about the issue of biological men in women's sports.

"ADC was smart to steer clear of Hong and her alternating positions, but many on the Left are still pushing candidates to embrace ideas that will actively repel the swing voters we need to win," Ms Erickson said.

Hopefully, the 2024 contenders will stand strong against their pressure campaigns.

Ms Harris lost the 2020 Democratic primary, surrendered almost every swing state to Mr Trump in 2024, and has come off worst in the culture war in her own party. With that record, winning in 2026 would be quite a feat.

China probes comedian over patriot song

A CHINESE comedian is under investigation after reportedly joking about a patriotic song.

Guo Deqing, 13, allegedly improvised part of a song written in 2016 about Chinese fighters defeating Japanese soldiers in the Second World War.

The comedian made the joke without the prior approval of the local authorities during the performance in the contest any of Wuhan last month, according to local media reports.

Yesterday, the Wuhan culture and tourism bureau confirmed to the AFP news agency that an investigation into Guo for "suspected violations" of the

rules on commercial performances was ongoing, but it was not clear what stage it had reached.

The ruling Communist Party, led by president Xi Jinping, maintains tight control over China's atrocents, and has enacted laws in recent years to protect national heroes and symbols from purported dander.

Since performances have since been postponed, with refunds handed to ticket-holders, and he appears to have become inactive on social media, according to AFP.

In the song titled "Playing my Job and Pipe", which is about the founding of the People's Republic of China, the comic allegedly altered the lyric "apart

on Wenshan Lake" is "apart in the Forbidden City" - China's former seat of imperial power - according to Chinese news site The Paper.

AFP said it was unable to contact Guo on social media, and his Welles account seemed to have been inactive since Aug 9.

From the northern city of Tianjin, Guo is known for reviving a city of rapid comic dialogue called croostalk, or "nampokeng" in Chinese - during the 2000s and 2010s.

THE name Caribou Rugrats does not exactly conjure the image of a business drug laid.

But the 16-year-old Mexican, whose real name is Carlos Alberto Paul Pineda, has become the Trump administration's newest poster boy for its campaign against 'nano-removal'.

Criminal groups once defined by their shadowy mystique are now adopting the language of social media, tobacco and internet culture - using emojis, dying, budding and music to build identities that can appeal to new generations.

Research published on 2020

by academics at the Colegio de México and the Senators University found that the Sinaloa Cartel and its rival, the Island New Generation Cartel (CNG), had been adopting their online presence to communicate with young people.

The study documented more than 100 active accounts in Mexico and found that criminal groups had been using colloquial language, popular music and emojis alongside fraudulent job advertisements to lure recruits through platforms such as TikTok, Facebook and X.

Emojis has become part of the cartels' coded digital language. The issue studied has been used to denote cartel operations and to inform seeking young people to work as hitters.

Accounts associated with Los Chapitos, the faction of the Sinaloa Cartel linked to the sons of Joaquin 'El Dago' Giannini, frequently used a pizza slice emoji alongside the letters 'de' - forming 'chapitas', a reference to the group's nickname.

The counter emoji has appeared repeatedly on accounts associated with the CNG. It is a reference to Somoos Oorganza Cervantes, known as 'El Mencho'. the cartels's former leader whose nickname was 'Lord of the Roomies'.

This new form of cartel propaganda that looks less like the traditional imagery of organized crime and more like a teenager's social media food.

David Mora, a senior analyst for Mexico at the International Crisis Group, said: 'What we are in terms of recruitment on social media is this blend of narratives, symbols and music, presented in different ways.'

'There are videos with messages that openly call for recruits, saying, 'We are漠视' for XYZ. Some groups are more active than others, including the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.'

'Another set of videos promotes the criminal life, preventing an aspirational image and glorifying a lifestyle of history. Promoting this sort of life also faces people uncriminal groups.'

Mr Mora said that a government crack down had previously led to dozens of accounts facing removed, but 'more videos were carca-

tating not long afterwards.' 'That speakers the postmenced these groups,' he said, adding, 'to demands permanent, constant mentoring of social media.'

However, he said, the sophistication of the online recruitment campaign should not obscure the circumstances of the people they are targeting.

'The people running these accounts are set talking to privileged, middle-class, upper class young men,' he added.

'They're talking to young men who come from really difficult backgrounds. They're appealing to a specific section of the population that has no opportunities.'

'They might be out of school, come from conflict within backgrounds or problems within their families, or

from violent neighbourhoods. Unfortunately, we have a lot of those in Mexico, so the pool of potential recruits is rather big.' The emojis, music and internet imagery may make the cartels online presence look feless less. But beneath the memes and coded symbols an recruitment strategy aimed at young people with few alternatives. 'It's a very sophisticated tool to recruit,' Mr Mora said. 'It makes a lot of appeals and a very complex in the way it blends narratives, symbols and music.' It might be really effective, but it is also effective because of the content from which these young men and kids are looking at it, which is a very complicated one.

Height of stupidity: Hiker climbs Italian peak in flip-flops and shorts

A HIKER in Italy has been criticised by the country's alpine rescue service for climbing a mountain dressed in flip-flops and swimming shorts.

The bare-chested man was photographed in beach wear ache climbed to the top of the highest peak of some fuses, a maned in which lies the tallest mountain in the Apennines.

In one photograph posted on social media, he was not even wearing the flip-flops - he went barefoot while drinking from a bottle of water.

Yet another internet tyranny: the 'Did Not Finish' book list

Illegal betting gangs targeting pensioners

Vulnerable people forced into money-laundering schemes as legitimate firms hit by Labour, says report

CRIMINAL are targeting pensioners to serve as 'money under' to finance illegal gambling networks, industry chiefs have warned.

Up to 3.5 million vulnerable people across Britain and Eastern Europe are being recruited by gangs to facilitate money laundering in the gambling. Mark market, says the betting and Game City Council (GSC).

A report warned that pensioners and

students were losing heroics hand over control of their bank accounts for illicit payments, helping gangs diagnose money. In some cases, the victims become financially dependent on the vicariously-signaling them.

Bosses said scaring taxes and the Government's regulatory champions on legitimate operators was battling illegal activity and putting vulnerable people at risk.

A spokesman for the BSC said: "If the Government continues to tilt the playing field in favour of illegal operators through higher taxes and lighter regulation, it will push every new customers towards a market that goes on taking some every rule and offers none of the protection of the regulated sector."

The report, carried out by advisory

firm Flavord Intelligence, said gangs were able to cover their trackearing a practice known as 'bans-sling', where payments related to illegal gambling are disguised as personal transactions using words such as 'educators' and 'flowers'.

Illegal operators can use thousands of bank accounts to control and move deposits, making payments appear to be personal transfers rather than gambling transactions.

The report said the people recruited to the networks can become 'part of the payment infrastructure of organised crime, often without realizing the case sequences'.

It warned that Britain's strict gambling rules have helped create an uprising for the black market. Bookies have

been subject to a raft of new rules and increased taxes under Labour in recent years. During her final budget as it has other factors in the money-growth over the

Complaints on energy firms soar as families brace for rises

CUSTOMER complaints about energy suppliers have soared as being fully pale pressure on households.

Bills are set to jump just as demand for heating begins to climb, despite Labour's manifesto pledge to bring down energy costs by £3000.

Ed Dodman, chief ombudsman, said: "The findings highlight the continued challenges facing many energy consumers at a time of ongoing pressure on household finances.

"We will continue to monitor complaint trends closely and work with suppliers to address areas of concern and ensure consumers can access the timely resolution when things go wrong."

JACKER LAND SURFER has delayed the rollout of its all-electric Defender model as the carmaker embuels on a cost-cutting drive.

A planned full redesign of the standard model of the Defender was supposed to benefit the museum meant of a new all-electric version of the best-selling off-contract.

However, the redesign has been passed for two years as it is too difficult to incorporate an electric battery into the current layout. The Sunday Times reported a smaller electric version of the Defender will still go ahead.

While no date had been formally announced for the new all-electric model, it was previously expected between 2008 and 2020, meaning the redesign has been delayed late in 2020s. A spokesman for JLB told The Sunday Times: "Defender is one of JLB's

greatest success stories. With more than 75 years of heritage, purpose and service capability, it is our class making business that is strong global demand and enduring brand appeal."

We are burdening our young people with debt when many of them do not need a degree to get work

WE ARE now well into the season when many of our 18-year-olds are formed on their academic future. Despite wide-ranging decisions of degrees and a continuing future over student debt, a record number of places have been offered to students for 2020-21. Yet our higher education system is stored in crisis. Our political leaders need to grasp the nettle and statue radical reforms.

We need to start by establishing some perspective. University ranks a successful experience which both increases a student's future: earning power and enhances their quality of life. Moreover, several of all universities are among the best in the world. They are a major asset to this country, both economically and culturally. Long may this contain...

The fundamental problems are that we send too many of our youngsters to university, there are too many universities, and too many courses of little or no world. And many students face a burden of debt which hangs over them in their early years of employment, appearing their disposable income and earning assets.

Many such student loans are never in repair. This may matter for the future, but individual students but it doesn't extinguish the waste that this student debt often represents. In this one the loan is the taxpayer.

How did we get loan? Whoever the subject is debated, the person who appears to attract more of the blame is far from fikar who, in 1994, said that his government would have three priorities: education, education and education. He stated that his ambition was that: that of our young people should go to university. This objective has been achieved. But is this an achievement to be proud of?

He is not out of step with received opinion. On the contrary, for the past couple of decades it has been widely nonincredible a university degree who eventually became a rewarding job and a successful life. This was, of course, believed by the educational establishment who shared this belief among the public. In finding parents about children had lost her to university themselves and wanted this desire to be their children.

Yet the proportion of the population that is raised to academic study is limited. Moreover, academic study does not necessarily need the qualities and levels of the public.

SIR RICHARD BRANNON'S much touted plan to bring away of the glamour of Virgin Atlantic to his own version of the Eurostar has been decided as a pipe dream by critics. Overcrowding at St Pancras, a chronic lack of outside team maintenance odor and the inevitable mountain of red tape have been viewed as almost insurmountable obstacles to anyone intent on ending Eurostar's monopoly over services through the Channel tunnel.

But after securing permission to run 20 in nine a day between London and the Continent from Britain's rail regulator, the Millenaries' Virgin Trains is finally beginning to win over deafness.

Virgin must still negotiate access to the tunnel itself, as well as trucks in France, Belgium and the Netherlands. And it faces a nervous wait for a fleet of 12 as yet untested high-speed trains on order from manufacturer Alstom.

However, a rising from regulators at the Office of Rail and Road (OBR) last week suggests Sir Richard may be about to make good on his ambition of returning to Britain's railways after Virgin Trains lost the West Coast Main Line franchise in 2010.

Virgin Trains is not the only operator intent on challenging Eurostar's 10-year monopoly.

Italy's state-owned Ternitalia announced earlier this month's €20m (£17bn) order for 10 new trains, around half of which it aims to deploy on Channel tunnel services, while a clutch of other would-be operators are also drawing up proposals.

If these plans come to Boston, competition on the route could explode within five years, which could have an impact matching that of the 1990s-the-court airline boom.

Fanging fare may encourage an influx of new customers and further losses the grip of airlines on routes such as London to Paris, where Eurostar already has 90pc of the market.

Train services from London are likely to reach further into Europe, with lower ticket prices making rail competitive as far as Germany, Switzerland and even Italy for travellers with time on their hands.

Mark Smith, a former OBR and Department for Transport executive who runs the Max in Sept 45 travel

website, reckons ticket prices could drop by close to a third. "You'd be looking at more capacity, higher service standards and fare that could be 90pc lower based on what we have seen with the advent of competition in Italy and Spain," he says. "That will in turn drive further market share gains for rail compared with the airlines and make it feasible to transductiver into Europe on a single ticket."

Virgin has so far been tight-lipped on what the Channel tunnel service might look like, with Phil

Whittingham, he project lead, saying only that the route is "ripe for change" and that Sir Richard intended to build a "premium customer experience".

A spokesman adds: "But as we've done with Virgin Atlantic and our holidays and hotels offering, you can expect bold ideas."

On Virgin Atlantic, that experience has included in-BigBe bar and managers with a shift to focusing on tech innovation, including five work from Elon Musk's Starlink and an AI-powered virtual cosciorge. Virgin has

specified single-decker trains for its purchase from Alstom, with an insider suggesting that they were more compatible with a full and real novel service than the double-deckers with which Eurostar is renewing its fleet.

Virgin has said it intends to operate an initial six return trains a day between London and Paris starting in October 2010, later increasing tech, followed by four to Brussels and three to Amsterdam. That would represent a substantial increase on the current timetable, with Eurostar offering in Italy services not less, eight or nine to Brussels and five to Amsterdam.

The company, owned by French state railway VSK P, said Virgin's plan confirmed "the huge potential for growth in international rail" and that it intends it is "play a full part in that growth." Jon North, an expert in European railways, says Virgin had impressed with its work to secure access to St Pancras, the line to the tunnel and the last remaining space at Temple Mills maintenance shed near Stratford before Ternitalia.

However, he says Virgin had offers a risk in choosing a bespoke version of a train built by Alstom in Italy which has not yet been approved in France, introducing the

"nightmare" scenario of the trains on being ready for 2030. Any slippage could open the door to

Ternitalia, which is viewed as aiming the most aggressive of European high-speed operators. "North says Ternitalia is likely to be capital on routes such as Paris to Lyon and Marseilles and Milan, rather than focusing on London.

Eurostar's switch to double-deckers for an order of up to 50 new trains

may also be problematic, he adds, since the Coloma model is not compliant with evacuation requirements within the tunnel in the event of fire.

It is likely that a significant number of the new trains will intensify the need on the Paris-Bransda route that Eurostar took over in 2022, easing the pressure on Virgin.

Waiting in the wings are Boston, backed by Spanish industrialist Jorge Conturo, an investor in the owner of National Express, the Dutch startup Brann, and UK-based Gemin, which has proposed running trains from Stratford and Ebballest to avoid the St Pancras bottleneck.

According to Smith, of the Max in Sept 45 website, Virgin's level het will be to play to its deesight by offering upmarket food and wine, exploring initiative such as allowing carriage of bicycles and dogs, which is currently banned from most Eurostar services. He says: "It's that hard to define Virgin pizzazz that people most want to see and they'll need to bring that to these trains."

Commander Robin Whiteside

Submariner who broke through the pack ice to surface at the North Pole in Dreadnought

COMMANDER ROBIN WHITESIDE, who has died aged 64, was the executive officer of HMA Dreadnought when she became the first British submarine to break through the pack pack ice and surface at the North Pole, in March 1998.

Dreadnought entered the Arctic savage on February 28 1970 to search for a 'petitzel', or window in the ice, through which she was could safely stop and force her 4,000 tonnes to the surface. Such upholding were rare, unpredictable and easily lost. Finding one in darkness from under the founty ocean level the nerve of everyone aboard.

Triumph by North Pole, Dreadnought's captain, Al Benawijit, and Whiteside, was second-in-commanded with alternate watches to roam the boat in a square search for a petitzy. Botanist and leading authority on liverworts and mosses

JEAN PATON, who has died aged 67, was a member of the following in the study of mosses, liverworts and mosses 4% a the globe known as bryo-agar.

Of about 20,000 bryophyte species known worldwide, approximately 1,000 have been recorded in Britain, which is around 58 per cent of all the species known in Europe. She was born Jean Anselon Comps on January 4 1928. Mild dyslexia and poor teaching at her different schools meant that she did not have to read to herself until she was also years old. Subsequent books included Magnolia in Cornwall (1968), with her husband Pat and Bryophyt Flora of the Isle of Islip (2004), with David Mitchell, the additional research was published as A Supplement to the Liverwort Flora of the British Isles in 2022.

Jean Paton was vice-president and president of the British Islesological Society from 1974 to 1977. She was appointed an honorary member of the society in 1994. Her herbarism, heavily weighted in favour of liverworts, was added to the collections of the Royal House Garden in Edinburgh in 1998.

Her husband died in 2012.

Winger whose goals helped Tottenham win the Double and the European Cup-Winners' Cup

THIRTY DYSOS, who has died aged 61, was an integral member of Tottenham. CALVIN HAYES, who has shot suddenly aged 52, was a founding member of the British pop trio Johnny Hates Jazz (BD), who enjoyed worldwide chart success in the late 1980s with him and his son, the illustrated Dreams and Tears that the Club.

All three members of the band came on several stock. Hayes, who played both hands and co-produced, was the son of the 1980s celebrated product of Melvin Most, who had revenues according everyone from the Annual through club to beat Quatre.
