WASHINGTON – Well past midnight one day this spring, these police officers pulled up to a nightclub where a man was escaping on a young woman lying on the sidewalk.

The officers stopped the attack and arrested him, according to a police report. It was the kind of assault police might encounter on almost any night in almost any city.

But one detail stood out to Police Officer Xavier Jimenez, who wrote the report: “There was approximately 10 national guard members in the area on routine patrol who did not take any action.

President Donald Trump deployed thousands of National Guard troops to Washington last summer as the centerpiece of what he describes as a no-holds-barred effort to combat crime, especially in cities run by Democrats.

Every day, small dolls of soldiers in camouflage and body armor patrol tourist-heavy areas of the U.S. capital, including national monuments, railway stations and the area around its professional baseball path.

What the soldiers seldom do, Reuters found, is fight crime.

Since their arrival last August, the National Guard soldiers Trump ordered to Washington have been mentioned in only a tiny fraction – about 1.3% – of the criminal cases filed in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, which handles nearly all the city’s criminal prosecutions. In dozens of cases, the soldiers appear not as people making the arrests but as victims of crime.

The roughly 4,500 soldiers currently deployed to Washington outnumber its 3,200 police officers. And they cost

more: The Trump administration last year told Congress that sending Guardsmen to the capital cost about $1.65 million a day – before officials doubled the number of troops this summer. The city’s most recent police budget was about $1.5 million daily.

The administration told Congress it plans to keep sending soldiers to Washington – though it has not said how many – until the end of Trump’s presidency in 2029 at a cost of $1.4 billion.

To gauge the impact of that deployment, Reuters reviewed every publicly available charging document filed in Superior Court and interviewed lawyers, residents, service members and others who are familiar with their work.

The soldiers mostly responded to minor incidents in neighborhoods that are wealthier, Winter and less dangerous than the rest of the capital, Reuters found after comparing court records to the city’s demographics and crime information.

WASHINGTON – Lawyers for Dr. Anthony Fauci have launched a legal defense fund for the former top U.S. infectious disease expert, saying that the need to respond to a growing number of state and federal investigations related to his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic will require substantial resources.

In January 2025, then-President Joe Biden issued a preemptive pardon to Fauci, amid accusations from Republican lawmakers that he played a role in research that contributed to the pandemic and later sought to cover up its origins, claims that have not been independently substantiated.

Fauci, who led the U.S. response to COVID-19, has denied the allegations.

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, has asked the Department of Justice to prosecute Fauci after he refused to answer questions about the pandemic at a congressional hearing in July. Three state attorneys general have since launched their own probes against him.

The defense fund underscores how Fauci, once the public face of the U.S. response to COVID-19, has become a central target of Republican efforts to revisit the origins of the pandemic and scrutinize government decision-making during the health crisis. His lawyers say the mounting investigations could result in lengthy and costly legal proceedings despite Rebeck pardon.

tinue working on the $400 million ballroom while a lawsuit by a historic preservation group seeking to stop the project proceeds.

The stay was issued by Chief Justice John Roberts, who handles emergency cases arising in Washington, DC.

In an Aug. 18 filing to the Supreme Court, Justice Department lawyers edwed Trump’s contention that the project is a security necessity, citing assassination, attempts against the president and other recent threats.

“This case involves an extraordinary and unlawful injunction that will halt the ongoing construction of the integrated military complex, including a totally secure ballroom space, at the East

Wing of the White House, which is vitally required by national security,” they wrote.

Trump welcomed the court’s action on Aug. 21.

“We are grateful for the Decision of the United States Supreme Court,” Trump wrote in a social media post. “The Military/Ballroom Complex being built on the ballroom grounds of the White House, which is so vital for National Security, will be THE OBLASTEST OF ITS KIND!”

Trump to ease beef tariffs

CHICAGO - President Donald Trump said on Aug. 22 he will temporarily ease beef tariffs to help lower prices, although U.S. cattle producers warned the move would hurt efforts to rebuild herds and economists said it would have little effect on prices.

Trump will sign an executive order within the next two weeks expanding by 500,000 metric tons the amount of ground beef that can enter the United States with lower import tariffs, to be in effect the 90 days, coming to lower prices as U.S. consumers struggle with grocery bills, the White House said.

Trump, in an earlier social media post, said he had 5 v.s. complacency" that the imported meat would be sold at 25% below current market prices under the plan.

The president did not provide further details, and the White House did not respond to Boston questions about which countries would supply the beef or discount their export prices.

"This third will reduce prices for Americans while giving space for our Great American Beef Hard to grow again," Trump wrote.

The National Cattlemen's Beef Association, the largest lobbying group representing U.S. numbers and cattle freezers, said Trump's plan would hurt farmers and numbers and could discourage expansion of the U.S. beef.

below market beef is not the way to rebuild the American cattle herd," the association's CEO, Colin Woodall, said in a statement.

United States Cattlemen's Association President Justin Tupper said in a separate statement: "You don't put America first by putting U.S. cattle producers back. This move will weaken our markets and gamble with food safety in the process."

Pennsylvania high food prices have become a central issue for voters ahead of the November millions elections, with Republicans seeking to shield their unprovened countries from public frustration over inflation.

Beef prices have been hovering near record highs, with U.S. cattle inventories at their lowest levels in 79 years, after elections stashed their herds due to a reasoning drought that burned up grazing herds and failed food costs.

Supplies tightened further after the United States suspended imports of

Mexican cattle last year amid concerns about the northward spread of a flesh-eating pest that infuses livestock, U.S. meatpackers have also been shuttering government plants in response to soaring cattle costs.

Cattle futures in the Chicago Mercantile Exchange tumbled to eighteenth lives on Aug. 22 after the announcement.

Economists and traders questioned whether Trump's plan would noticeably bring down beef prices, as 300,000 tons over 90 days represents a small share of U.S. beef consumption, and some countries have not yet massed out their tariff-rate quota imports.

"This is just a drop in the bucket," said Independent Under Dan Norson. "It really does nothing in its the main issue which is a greatly reduced supply of cattle here in the U.S. That will take time and the actions of the market to correct."

NEW YORK - Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones won an appeal in over family's defamation lawsuit over his false claims that the 2002 Sandy Hook mass shooting was a hoax, reducing the judgment against him from 800 million to about $0.3 million.

Jones, who filed for bankruptcy after being sued by parents of children claim in the shooting, must still pay $0.4 billion in related judgments from a Connecticut court. In the Texas case, a jury awarded over 800 million to plaintiff's lead herds and a sandii Leese.

Heads and Leese said they suffered years of harassment and abuse at the hands of Jones' followers, who falsely believed they had about their 6-year-old son. Jesse Lewis' death.

Texas law typically caps punitive damages, which made up $45.2 million of tax verdict, at $750,000 per plaintiff. A three-judge panel of the Texas Court of Appeals ruled Aug. 21 that the trial can be made by shooting the cap, and it ordered the punitive damages reduced to $1.6 million.

and Lewis' lawyers to amend their claims after they won a judgment on Jones' liability bid before the ruling on damages. The change allowed the parents to successfully agree that the trustees over their son's death counted as a disability that would exempt them from the punitive damages cap.

The appeals court ruled Aug. 21 that the parents should not have been allowed to amend their claims to include the disability argument, because that argument required factual findings that the jury did not make in the case.

Jones' attorney Andrew Reysal said he was not surprised by the ruling and

that Texas law on punitive damages is very clear.

Admirers for Health and Lewis did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Jones claimed for years that the 2002 killing of 20 students and six staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, was staged with Jones as part of a government plot to seize American guns. He has since acknowledged the shooting occurred.

Jones has also tried to challenge the punitive damages in the Connecticut case but the order is most upheld most of those damages and the U.S. Supreme Court declined to take Jones' appeal.

Some of Jones' assets were liquidated during the previous bankruptcy, but a U.S. bankruptcy judge ruled that Jones remains liable for most of the defamation verdicts.

The priority owes site the Onion has sought to acquire some of Jones' intellectual property in bankruptcy, and it began posting purely inhuman-lexandized videos in July after an earlier failed attempt to acquire the inhuman name in a disputed bankruptcy sale.

Wall Street indexes climb on day but fall for week

The main U.S. stock indexes closed higher on Aug. 22 but showed declines for the week, which was masked by an easier place over fluctuating government bond yields and a lack of clarity on progress in the Middle East.

The 84P 500 and the tech-heavy Nasdaq stopped three-week winning streaks, while the Dow registered its second consecutive weekly low.

Equity investors have been taking their own from the direction of U.S. government bond yields to recent seasons as the prospect of higher borrowing rate changes in the opposite. Stocks had closed lower on Aug. 20 as bond yields rose while equities had advanced on Aug. 19 as bond yields fell.

Pentagon fires leadership of U.S. military newspaper

WASHINGTON – The editor-in-chief of the State and Stripes U.S. military newspaper said on Aug. 21 that he was losing fired for insubordination and a source familiar with the matter confirmed to Reuters that the Pentagon had sent notices to the paper's leadership informing them that they would be let go.

According to the notice, I am losing fired for stuting in a CBS interview that hypothetical censorship of news for service members would constitute a personal red line," Erik Slavin said in a statement.

The source familiar with the matter, who was not authorized to speak publicly, said that Max Lederer, the long-time publisher of the newspaper who was set to retire at the end of September, was also removed. In his email this week announcing his retirement, Lederer wrote that it was clear the Pentagon had a new vision for the newspaper that was different from his own.

Lara Korie, who covered the Middle East for the newspaper, said on social media Aug. 21 that she had also been fired. She said it was because she had told CBS News that she works for State and Stripes and not for Pentagon.

The Pentagon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Rumba: Maiden-tap strike on Ukraine shopping center kills 16

KNY – At least 8 people were killed and more than 150 wounded on Aug. 21 when Russian dinner struck a shopping center in central Ukraine, authorizing said chief President Volodymyr Zelenskyy promising a response to what he called an "art of barbarism."

Regional Gov. Oleksandr Rumba said that 22 children were among the wounded in the daytime attack on the city of Koryst Kh, which is Zelenskyy's hometown.

"There are 29 people in serious condition, including five children," Rumba said.

Public health policy on Aug. 22, Rumba said nine people were preliminarily considered amusing, including two children, and that rescuers were continuing to close the rattle of the shopping center.

Zelenskyy called the attack "absolutely cynical and despicable," saying that a second Russian drone hit the shopping center half an hour after the first in what he said was a deliberate attempt to target emergency services.

Turkey to seek interpol notice for Netanyahu over flotilla case

ISTANBUL – Turkey said on Aug. 21 it would seek an interpol and notice for the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as part of a domestic criminal case linked to an attack on airborne working to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.

NATO member Turkey has been one of the fiercest critics of Israel's assault on Gaza and has previously issued domestic arrest warrants for Netanyahu over the war there.

In May, Israeli forces opened fire on at least two vessels from the Global Summit Flotilla sailing toward Gaza as it was making a renewed attempt to deliver aid to the enclave.

In a post on it, Turkish Justice Minister Akın Gurluk said arrest warrants had been issued for Netanyahu and another suspect on charges that included genocide, crimes against humanity and torture as part of a case against 85 people over the Israeli interception in international waters.

Asked about Gurluk's statement, Netanyahu's office said: "[Turkish President Tayyip] Eskapay's pathetic attempt to intimidate the leaders and soldiers of Israel, the only true democracy in the Middle East, will go nowhere."

FAGERSTA, Sweden – An 18-year-old man armed with a sword attacked students at a Swedish high school on Aug. 21. He was shot and sinking three, and police shot and detained him as media reported the attacker was a former student at the school.

The incident occurred on Aug. 21 at the British high school in the central Swedish town of Fagersta, which has about 13,000 residents. The school had just reopened after summer break.

Police told a news conference that the suspect was an 18-year-old man who was a former student to custody on support of murder.

U.S. sets steep water cuts

Slashes Colorado River supplies to CA, NV, AZ

The U.S. government on Aug. 21 finalized a two-year plan to slash water supplies to California, Nevada and Arizona to manage the drought-stricken Colorado River, while leaving open the possibility of far deeper cuts later in the decade.

The three so-called Lower Basin states will take around a 25% reduction in water from the river in 2027 and 2028, but cuts could nearly double in later years, according to the plan signed by Interior Secretary Doug Burgum.

Arizona and Nevada have said any plan to double the cuts after 2028 would devastate their economies. Arizona has threatened to sue the federal government if it imposed these potential cuts as part of the new 10-year plan.

Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and Wyoming, the Upper Basin states, face an mandatory cuts under the plan.

The Colorado River provides water to 1 in 10 Americans, irrigates land producing 15% of U.S. food output and generates power for 6 million people in seven states. The river's governing agreements allocated roughly equal amounts of water to the two basins in 2022, but California, Arizona and Nevada have historically consumed more water, which is a central point of concern.

Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs, a Democrat, applauded the federal government for adopting the Lower Basin's proposal for water cuts in 2027 and 2028.

But she said the government's 10-year plan fell short of providing water Lower Basin states were entitled to. She called the Upper Basin's refusal to negotiate reductions to third water usage.

"Arizona stands prepared to protect our water by any legal means necessary and won't back down in defense of our rights," Hobbs said in a statement.

In three years of failed negotiations between the seven states, Upper Basin states refused to take cuts, arguing that face declining water supplies due to the severe drought impacting the U.S. West.

The river's Lake Powell and Lake Mead, the nation's two largest reservoirs, hit record lows this month.

The water level of Lake Powell sat at 3,580.2 feet above sea level on Aug. 20 – less than 30 feet above the minimum level needed to operate the Glen County Dam by broiler to recover plant in Arizona.

In line with a May 1 proposal made by the Lower Basin states, their water allocation will be reduced by a combined 1.5 million acre-feet per year in both 2027 and 2028.

The reductions consist of 1.25 million acre-feet per year in mandatory cuts and an agreement by the three states to conserve 700,000 acre-feet over the two years to reach combined water savings in the two-year period of 1.2 million acre-feet.

However, annual mandatory cuts to the three states could almost double 0.5 million acre-feet per year if needed to maintain critical reservoir levels following the first two-year operating period.

Any lawsuits over those potential cuts could mean more years of uncertainty.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, said all seven states that depended on the Colorado River needed to conserve water.

"This operations plan provides only short-term stability," Newsom said in a statement. "Any long-term solution must share responsibility fairly across all seven states in recognition of the new reality of the Colorado River."

Hydrologist Isaak Porter still saw a strong chance Arizona would sue the federal government over its 2029 through 2036 plan. She said the state objected to the Bureau of Reclamation's assessment of its authority to cut water deliveries from Lake Mead to Lower Basin states and not impose mandatory cuts on Upper Basin states.

"The Bureau has made clear that if reservoir elevations decline to certain points, the Bureau may impose deeper cuts or limit releases from Lake Powell or take other actions in the future far beyond what the Lower Basin has agreed to," said Porter, director of the KU Center for Water Policy at Arizona State University.

Mexican governor accused by U.S. of cartel ties returns to office

MEXICO CITY – The governor of Mexico's Sinaloa state, Ruben Rocha Moya, returned to office on Aug. 21 after taking leave for more than three months following U.S. drug trafficking charges, a move likely to deepen strains between Mexico and the United States.

Rocha, 77, a member of Mexico's ruling Morena party, said in a statement posted on X that he was resuming his 64,000 with a "dear conscience" and his "head held high."

The development marks a remarkable turnaround for Rocha, who has not only avoided, for now, extradition to the United States but has also reclaimed the governor's office.

His return adds a new twist to a sugar that has tested U.S. Mexico security cooperation and underscored the complexities in the bilateral relationship despite most of joint efforts against cartel. Mexico remains deeply resistant to U.S. actions it sees as overcooking on its sovereignty.

The Mexican government is "more than happy to extradite drug lords if the U.S. wishes, but they're not so eager to extradite members of the political party of their president," said Martin Camillo, a public policy expert at the University of Chicago.

But there were signs that Rocha's "dear" position came to a place was recurred today by Mexico's President Claudia Shonbaum and the Morena party that she leads.

Rocha said Mexican authorities had found no evidence to support the accusations against him and described the U.S. case as a politically motivated attack on Shonbaum's leftist movement.

Morena, however, issued a statement, saying that her prior knowledge of Rocha's decision and distancing it—self from the news.

"The Sinaloa Cartel traffic-shoally drugs to the United States and is a designated terrorist organization that could not operate without the help of corrupt officials," the spokesperson said.

Rare charges against governor

In April, U.S. prosecutors alleged Rocha and nine other current and former officials conspired with a faction of the Sinaloa Cartel known as Lee Chaplins, helping it traffic-drugs into the United States in exchange for political support and forbes.

"The indictment marked a rare expansion of anti-cartel action beyond drug houses to include a sitting senior Mexican politician, Washington, has frequently accused Mexican politicians of having ties to organized crime. Yet Rocha in the first sitting governor to face charges for the United States.

The accusations inflamed tensions between the countries, which are close

allies.

Even as Mexican authorities initiated their own investigation into Rocha in early May, Shonbaum framed the case as foreign interference by the United States and used it to intensify her calls for national sovereignty.

"It's difficult to imagine Rocha retaining to office without President Shonbaum's blessing. "The big question is how the U.S. government will react to this decision."

David Mora, a senior analyst for the International Crisis Group, said Rocha's return to power puts Shonbaum in an "even more complicated position because now she's going to have to deal with more pressure coming from the U.S."

The White House did not respond to questions about soldiers' work. Spokeswoman Lauren Bis said Trump's efforts in the city have 'blown down crime, beautiful the city, and improved quality of life for countless individuals.'

DC Mayor Mupiel Browne, who has called the deployment 'problematic,' declined to comment, as did the city's police department.

The National Guard took force managing the Washington deployment did not respond to questions about its work, or its cost. A spokeswoman, Leona Hendrickson, said soldiers were too busy to be interviewed.

Although soldiers have sometimes been in a public or assaults, many of the crimes for which they detained people have been found.

In October, soldiers chased down a man who had taken two slices of pizza and offered $2.40 partial payment, according to police records. A week later, they stopped a man who threw a rock at a bus. So April, they detained a man who allegedly stole two beef jerky sticks worth about $7 from a pharmacy, according to the police official. A booklet holds a woman who drank a bottle of root beer without paying.

The Rev. William Young, who lives in the Navy Yard neighborhood where soldiers patrol frequently, laughed when asked whether the troops made him feel safer.

'It's a way of keeping fear in all of us,' he said. 'This is not how a capital of democracy should be protected, by having soldiers marching to protect the streets.'

'They could have done more'

Reuters found 227 criminal cases in Washington in which police mentioned the involvement of the National Guard. In about a quarter of them, 52 cases, soldiers single-handedly stopped people suspected of a crime, often for things like being busy, pumping hazardous to sound paying subway fare. In another 45 cases, soldiers helped police officers arrest someone.

Videos related to by community groups also show troops in groups of 20 or more stationed outside subway stations at night, blocking teens from descending the escalation to enforce a city curfew.

'It's like they brought people here from all across the country, just to be here. And they harass people a lot more than they are actually doing police work,' said the Rev. Norman Nixon, the pastor of the Union Temple Baptist Church.

Although the Guardsmen have been deputized as U.S. Marshals, according to government records, they have limited law enforcement power. The Pentagon has described their work as 'green money up right, above all there meant to deter crime rather than respond to it.' They use debate suspects, but then most call police officers to make a formal arrest.

Court records describe 30 instances in which the troops were witnesses to crimes, sometimes simply watching multiple police officers arrived. They have told officers about a drug deal, a man-urinary in public, another who exposed him with a police police. In court the motivering with chalk on a monument outside the city's train station, one of them wearing a banana costume.

The soldiers called emergency services after finding Jones unresponsive after a fight. They later told police they thought Jones was merely intoxicated. They did not realize, until after officers reached the scene, that he had been stabbed so severely his intestines were spilling out. He died in hospital about two hours later.

'They could have done more to help him,' his aunt said.

The service members themselves have often been victims, a fact understood last year when two soldiers from West Virginia were shot out far from the White House, killing one of them.

Reuters found 62 cases in which people were charged with pushing, punching or threatening soldiers.

Nine were accused of spilling on the soldiers. One man allegedly tried to grab a soldier's pistol as the soldier tried to arrest him for sending handful caps in a subway station. Another man was charged after he told a group of soldiers that he wanted to 'shoot you ... with a bauxite,' according to a police report.

And twice, police in Washington arrested off-duty soldiers for violating the city's firearms laws, though the U.S. Attorney's Office dropped the charges against both of them.

This summer, they took on a new mission, spending the Lincoln Memorial indicting Pool, which the Trump administration spent millions of dollars to renounce only to use it rare gases with algae as its liner peeled away.

Trump claimed the pool was sabotaged by vandals. But U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pitre eventually conceded that a government contractor 'forefoot' the job.

Patrolling safer areas

The United States has long used National Guard soldiers to respond to disasters, help secure major events like the finger fowl and occasionally spell riots, but they haven't been used for everyday crime fighting. Trump also authorized smaller deployments in Memphis and New Orleans and has mused

about sending soldiers to other cities.

'You do not want armed soldiers on the streets of America,' said Gen. Randy Manson, who retired in 2002 as the second-in-command of the National Guard Bureau.

He said soldiers are all-prepared for police work and more expensive than hiring more police officers.

Determining the soldiers' impact on crime in Washington is not straightforward. In addition to the soldiers, the Trump administration sent hundreds of extra federal agents into the city, who largely functioned as local police officers.

The number of murders in Washington fell for the third consecutive year. But Immacile members also dropped in cities where the government has not sent soldiers or additional federal agents. And the total number of violent crimes - serious assaults, robberies and sex offenses in addition to Immaciles - reported by city police between January and mid-August in marginally higher than last year, about 4%.

A study in May by the nonpartisan Nokanee Center found that sending soldiers into Washington led to fewer stolen cars but had no impact on violent crimes.

Charles Stinson, a senior fellow at the pro-Trump Heritage Foundation, said the soldiers' visibility served as a deterrent.

'When you're speeding and you see a cup, you slow down,' he said. 'If those National Guard went poor and left town tomorrow, crime would go up.'

The Reuters review of court records found little evidence of soldiers' presence in high crime, neighborhood's where they might have responded to more serious crimes.

Instead, the court records show soldiers were more likely to be mentioned in arrest records in city neighborhoods that have higher incomes, in which more people have college degrees, and where more people are White. Most of the arrests in which soldiers participated were either near the city's core or its subway steps.

Reuters used the location of incidents in court records to identify the areas in which soldiers were either assisting the police or seeking help from them; then compared them, neighborhood to the rest of the city.

'That does not account for places soldiers might have been sent if they did not interact with law enforcement there. But it suggests that their presence was not aimed at spoiling the violent crime that had escaped parts of the city in the past.

Sailes didn't, an outcasts overdose for with the Anacostia Coordinating Council, a nonprofit operating in a low-income part of the city, said that man had his experience.

'I haven't seen them all year,' he said.

Torrent of attacks

Fauci will have to secure legal assistance in at least three days before, his lawyers said, in part for document review and production in response to the subpoena.

Fauci will not receive any payment or other form of distribution from the legal defense fund, his lawyers said. It is set up as a trust with an independent corporate trustee, according to Fauci's legal team.

Neither Fauci nor his lawyers have raised over how the money will be distributed or how the fund will be managed, his lawyers said. Services submitted by Fauci's attorneys will be reviewed by an independent expert adviser, they said.

Once all of Fauci's litigation concludes, any remaining funds will be distributed to charity, his lawyers said.

The New Supreme Court acted on Aug. 21, a spokesperson for the National Trust for Historic Preservation said: 'To be clear, this is not a final decision on the merits of the government's stay application, and we await further action.'

The district judge's order did not permanently bar construction of a ball-

room. It blocked above-ground efforts while allowing below-ground construction to continue, as well as work deemed 'strictly necessary' for the safety and security of the White House. In its ruling, the DC Circuit said national security arguments 'are not an automatic get-out-of-law-free card.'

The Justice Department said in its Aug. 18 filing that the overall East Wing project - including both the underground facilities and the above-ground ballroom - is 65% complete.

Trump has said the ballroom project is a security necessity, and referred to the structure as a 'military center' in a post on Truth Sexual. Trump called the DC Circuit's decision 'immobilized' and politically motivated, and said it left him, after White House officials and various senators to admit.

'This unjust decision must be overlooked by the Supreme Court in its entirety,' Trump wrote.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation in court papers urged the justices to turn away the administration's

bid to continue with ballroom construction while litigation proceeds.

'Each court to examine these question has agreed that [the Trump administration had] no unilateral legal authority - constitutional, statutory or otherwise - to build a massive ballroom on the site of the now-demolished East Wing,' lawyers for the group wrote.

'And each court has identified a demonstrated in an uncertain terms that they must stop their illegal construction unless and until they receive express approval from Congress,' they wrote.

The project is part of Trump's broader efforts to endorse the Washington landscape, including plans to build a 1,000-foot arch-and-revenge for Kennedy Center, a cultural landmark and performance center.

The demolished East Wing housed the first lady's offices and the White House meets the next. It was originally built in 1902 during Theodore Roosevelt's presidency and greatly expanded in 1942 during Franklin Roosevelt's presidency.

Clark fires 64 to grab outright BMW lead

Wyndham Clark pulled off his second consecutive bogey-free 64 Friday to establish a one-stroke lead at the BMW Championship at Bellevue Country Club in St. Louis.

Clark is 12-under 12ft at the halfway mark of the FedEx Cup playoffs' middle event. The top 30 in the points race after Sunday will qualify for the season-ending Tour Championship.

Clark entered this week fifth in points thanks to a two-win season that included his second U.S. Open. He admitted a playoff win would look nice in his trophy case.

"Obviously mapes are the No. 1, and then any time you can win any tournament's big, but a signature event or a playoff event is massive," Clark said. "I've been close in this event a couple times, so it would be nice to pull through and get a W."

Clark made three birdies on each side Friday. He has hit 31 of 36 greens in regulation this week, leading the field, while getting up and down from the sand in all three attempts.

While Clark is safely hooked for Atlanta next week, Gary Woodland has everything to play for as No. 31 in the standings, currently the first player out. He birdied his last two holes to shoot a 5-under 6ft and take sole possession of second at 11 under.

Luke Fickell, Wisconsin: Fickell seemed like a good choice when Wisconsin plucked him from Cincinnati, not long after he took the Boards to the playoff. Not all hires that look smart on paper turn out to be good in reality.

Wisconsin faced a decision last year amid a second straight losing season: Fire Fickell and fork over millions in buyout bucks, or up the ante on NIL investment. Wisconsin kept Fickell, choosing to pour more into its roster.

Smith shines as Jets dump Steelers

Geno Smith made the most of his love drive, completing all of his passes and throwing for a touchdown as the New York Jets earned a 17-0 preseason win over the host Pittsburgh Steelers on Friday.

Smith finished 7 of 7 for 65 yards while guiding a game-opening, 10-play, 69-yard drive. The march culminated with Smith hitting a wide-open, Jetsie Wroxler on the flat, and the tight end rumbled for a 15-yard TD.

Three other quarterbacks saw action for the Jets (I-3), with Cade Kishnik connecting on 10 of 14 passes for 75 yards. Quincy Skinner Jr., who finished with a game-high four receptions for 47 yards, capped the scoring with a 31-yard touchdown on a fourth-quarter pass from Brady Cook.

For the second game in a row, the Steelers (I-3) held out starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Will Howard drew the start and threw two interceptions while going 10-for-15 for 74 yards. Drew Allar finished 8 of 23 for 20 yards.

Pittsburgh's Kialeb Johnson was the game's leading rookie with 30 carries for 39 yards.

Panthers 34, Jaguars 17

Bryce Young enjoyed a successful two-series appearance, helping Candiua regular a victory at Jacksonville.

The fourth-year quarterback completed 5 of 6 passes for 49 yards. His second drive resulted in the game's first touchdown on a 5-yard run by Jonathon Brooks.

Kenny Pickett got the bulk of the action under center for the Panthers (2-1), and he went 15 of 15 for 137 yards and a touchdown. John Minchin III had six receptions for 77 yards.

Trevor Lawrence again sat out for the Jaguars (I-3), with Nick Mullens getting the start and producing 65 yards on 6-of-7 passing. Joey Aguilar added 130 yards and a touchdown on 9-of-10 passing. Trebor Pena made four catches for 72 yards and a score, and Amore Abdullah added six carries for 45 yards.

Jordan Love played just one series

but he made it count, engineering a 21-play, 63-yard drive that culminated with an 8-yard touchdown pass to Marlsharen Lloyd, as Green Bay defeated host Denver.

Love finished with 56 yards passing for the Packers (I-3) before giving way to Tyrol Taylor, who only hit on 4 of 8 passes for 17 yards but did throw a 2-yard score to Will Shepherd. Kyle McLeod took most of the snaps under center, completing 12 of 39 passes for 119

yards. Shepherd was the game's leading receiver with six catches for 47 yards. Trey Smack connected on four field goals, with a long of 59 yards.

Broncos quarterback Bo Nix made a successful return from his broken ankle, connecting with X.J. Harvey on a 21-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter. Nix played two series, with the second resulting in a 9/11 and 53-yard field goal. Nix wound up hitting 6 of 9 passes for 76 yards.

Raiders not quite ready to name starting QB

Las Vegas Raiders coach Klint Kishnik is in no rush to name a starting quarterback and says the battle between rookie Fernando Mendoza and veteran Kirk Cousins will continue.

"We got another week. I don't want anyone to be comfortable in their job," Kishnik said after Thursday's preseason road win against the Houston Texans. "It should always be that way for all positions. So, let's keep going."

Mendoza, the Heisman Trophy winner and No. 1 overall draft pick, started the 22-20 victory and threw an 80-yard pick out in the first quarter. He played the first half and completed 8 of 15 passes for 96 yards.

Coach Kishnik outlined for the team what the plan was going to be with the stunties, essentially for Woods 1, 2 and 3 of the preseason, to keep it internally. Mendoza said: "That was something I knew going into the game was going to be a great experience as a first start in the NFL preseason, which is always the next step."

Cousins, who turned 38 on Wednesday, did not take any snaps against the Texans after playing just one drive in the preseason opener vs. Arizona on Aug. 13.

Cousins was 5-of-6 passing for 50 yards and a touchdown against the Cardinals, while the 22-year-old Mendoza threw for 97 yards and a TD on 10-of-10 passing.

Las Vegas concludes preseason action at home against the San Francisco 49ers next Thursday and opens the regular season against the visiting Miami Dolphins on Sept. 31.

Seahawks WR Bobo suffers 'serious' knee injury

Beattie Seahawks wide-receiver Jake Bobo suffered a 'serious' knee injury during a joint practice session with the Tennessee Titans in Nashville, head coach Mike Macdonald said.

"Our heart goes out to Jake Bobo," Macdonald said after the joint practice. "It seems like it's going to be a serious (right) knee (injury). We're going to get an image. But early Arizona, just looks like it's a long-term injury. That's unfortunate."

Bobo was curled off the practice field after thrown a pass near the sideline.

He played in 11 games last season and caught two passes on two targets for 20 yards. Bobo played on 27% of the offensive snaps (27) and 43% of special teams snaps (45). He made two catches in three playoff games for 34 yards and one TD for the Seahawks, who beat New England 29-13 in Super Bowl LX.

For his career, Bobo has 34 receptions on 44 targets for 323 yards and three touchdowns in 45 regular-season games (three starts) since 2023.

Bobo, 28, could have been a restricted free agent in the offseason when the Seahawks tendered a $5.5 million offer. The Jacksonville Jaguars signed him to an offer sheet on a two-year, $6.5 million deal, with $4.5 guaranteed, but Seattle matched the offer, per Ipotrac.com.

"He's a beast. He's just a great, great football player, a great Seahawk," Macdonald said. "Hopefully, (we) reflected that in our investment. We love him. We'll be there beside him as he recovers and pay for a speedy recovery... We said a prayer for him. Hate to see it."

Falcons add DT depth

The Atlanta Falcons signed defensive tackle Eric Johnson II.

A fifth-round pick by Indianapolis in 2022, Johnson has appeared in 51 games (no starts) and recorded 41 tack-

les, one sack and one fumble recovery with the Cubs (2022-22, 2023) and New England Patriots (2024).

Johnson, 28, spent the offseason and training camp with the Minnesota Vikings before being released on Wednesday.

Report: Private equity firm Arctos buying 10% of Falcons

Arctos Partners is adding a fourth NFL franchise to its portfolio by purchasing a 10% stake in the Atlanta Falcons. Front Office Sports and CNBC reported.

The private equity firm already owns stakes in the Buffalo Bills, Cleveland Browns and Los Angeles Chargers.

The deal with Arctos includes a $85.6 billion valuation for the Falcons. Arctos will acquire the 10% stake in two stages, starting with a 7.5% stake, according to Sportico. A vote on the transaction is planned for October.

According to NFL rules, a private equity firm can invest in no more than six teams and the maximum stake size is 10%.

Falcons owner Arthur Blank owns about 73% of the team but it is unclear whether his shares are involved in the deal with Arctos, according to Front Office Sports.

Arctos, which is owned by the sports

management company KKR & Co. Inc., also holds a stake in several franchises in the NBA, NHL and MLB.

Colts sign TE Galbreath

The Colts signed free agent tight end 21 Galbreath and waived cornerback Jul/Debr McMillan.

Galbreath spent 2025 on the Pittsburgh Steelers' practice squad after going undrafted out of South Dakota, where he caught 93 passes for 1,955 yards and 2 touchdowns in 45 games (39 starts) from 2020-24.

McMillan signed with the Colts on June 1 as an undrafted free agent after playing collegiately at TCU (2020-23) and Minnesota (2024-25).

Former Cards exec Gold faces second state betting investigation

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission has opened a second investigation into former Arizona Cardinals scouting executive Ryan Gold's alleged betting activity.

The probe follows an inquiry opened by the Arizona Department of Gaming in July. According to an ESPN report on Friday, the Massachusetts investigation focuses on unusual betting patterns in the state.

The NFL suspended Gold indefinitely in July after finding that he disclosed confidential draft information and participated in wagers involving football games.

Gold has filed an appeal. His hearing is scheduled for Sept. 23.

"There is absolutely zero substance to the claims made against Ryan Gold," Gold's attorney Mike Carpine, told ESPN. "The NFL's investigation is as deeply flawed and so wrong. He will be vindicated next month in our appeal."

NFL rules prohibit league and club employees from betting on sports, assisting others with wagers or providing information that is not available to the public. The league determined that Gold disclosed inside information regarding Arizona's 2026 draft picks place to their announcement. Additionally, investigators found that he took part in pailers involving NFL and college football games.

Gold was in his 19th season with the organization and his second as director of college scouting.

Logano rides momentum into New Hampshire

New Hampshire Motor Speedway's lone NASCAR Cup Series race of the 2020 season will use the same short-track tire setup in Sunday afternoon's Dollar Tree 301 that was used at Richmond last weekend.

So, what else can be expected from the 1058-mile racing surface that has been called "Mortions file on steroids" in London, N.H., roughly twice the length but similarly backed as the Virginia League.

First, there's a decent chance a Ford or Toyota will be celebrating in Victory Lane when the 301 laps are clicked off in the Granite State.

Team Penske's Ryan Blaney, whose No. 52 Ford has blazed through qualifying line past two weeks, is the defending race winner, leading 20 laps and beating Wood Brothers driver Josh Berry by 0.937 seconds on Sept. 25.

Ford's second record at NUMB, which has hosted only one race each campaign since 2016, is impressive.

A car featuring the blue oval on the level has won five of the last eight races at London, though 2020 winner Brad Kavelowski is the only other active Ford driver to be first to the checkers in that stretch.

Toyota can also thump its chest. The introduction has won eight of 14 races since the 2014 mile Buick and 1845 Kenseth started the run by sweeping the 2005 events.

Chevrolet has only been triumphant once in the past 19 races. Kevin Harvick in 2016.

Among the drivers, no one has sizzled like three-time Cup Series champion Joey Logano, a two-time winner over the past four events, both on short tracks.

At last, it's been a running past six starts as the 16-year-old Middletown, Conn., native has advanced from 2016 to ninth in the standings, spotlighting him as a driver who could embark on another title run.

Logano followed up a 12th-place run in Chicago with a ninth-place finish at Atlanta and won in North Wilkesboro. The No. 22 then came home third at Indianapolis, 14th at Iowa and was victorious again at Richmond.

Not a bad summer spree for the driver many fans feel benefited most from the previous 'win and you're in' playoff format. Logano became the poster boy for the more jimminky format that produced championships that some have referred to as 'Mickey Mouse'.

His most recent hardware in 2024 ce-

mented their opinion. Logano made the Championship 4 despite having just seven top-five finishes the entire season, while Dominick Motorsports' Kyle Larson had six victories and was left out.

Home still, Logano's average finish of 171 was the poorest ever for a full season by a Cup champion.

'They're all high,' Logano said. 'I don't care what the format is. Everywhere the rules when it started, OK?' - Do I have a little chip on my shoulder? Yes. That's a clear yes. So much that our

little team slogan in our harder, our scoreboard, is 4 the Hatero.

'That's where we're at. That's a little good extra motivation.'

Harvick shared his thoughts this week on his 'SPEDY' podcast with BradyCar announcer Will Burton. 'When you look back at it, I think that's the reason that (NASCAR) changed the format because it was a little Mickey Mouse,' he said.

That opinion has not put a governor on Logano's hot pursuit of a fourth crown.

Mike Norvell, Florida State: It's no surprise. PSU considered roaring Norvell last year, when he served a fourth losing season in six years on the job. Norvell's big buyout protected him, but he can't hide any longer. PSU would own Norvell a buyout of about $45 million if it fires him after this season.

That'll be failure money the Semi-independent stomach if he can't reignite a starved program.

Dave Aranda, Baylor: Aranda survived the hot seat two years ago by delivering a winning record, but after going 5-7 last season, he's had it in the hot box. He's put his hopes in Florida transfer quarterback Ed Lapeau to bail him out of trouble.

Aranda won the Big 12 championship in 2023, but that's too long ago to offer him any support. Plus, like others on this list, he's working for a different Air than the one who hired him. Like Norvell, Aranda is entering his seventh season. Coaches who flude in Year 7 typically don't see a Year 8.

Mike Lockaley, Maryland: Lockaley reiterated his recruiting chops a couple of years ago when he signed blue-chip quarterback Malik Washington.

To keep his job, Lockaley must show his coaching chops and accelerate in West Carolina's second season as the starter. Lockaley delivered some solid records and level links in the middle of his tenure, now entering its eighth season, but he's only under contract through the 2027 season.

That leaves him protected by a buyout that's peanuts compared to most peers.

Bill Belichick, North Carolina: Belichick hasn't just been had for North Carolina. He's been a national embarrassment. There was his bizarre interview with 638 before he ever reached a game.

There's the persistent drama with Belichick's 25-year-old girlfriend, aka his 'Muse,' who's waged a crusade

against the university. Then, Belichick's GM got placed on administrative leave.

Belichick might be the GOAT in the NFL, but he's a joke in college football, and it's hard to justify playing the long game with a 74-year-old coach.

Shane Beamer, South Carolina: Nobody can say Beamer didn't deliver good times for South Carolina. Twice, he beat Dabo Swinney and Clemson. His Game-racks hung 10 points in the first half on their No. 3 Texas A&M last November.

Then, the second half started, and South Carolina blew a 27-point lead. Hello darkness, my old friend. Beamer watched offensive coordinates in the offseason, but his roster includes many familiar faces, including veteran quarterback LaNunta Sellers.

Could get hot

Lincoln Riley, USC: USC pushed in a big stack of chips to plunder Riley from Oklahoma. What's it got to show for its investment? No playoff appearances, and Riley's best season was his first, when the Trojans played in the Pac-12.

USC is a private school, so Riley's buyout is not public, but it's believed to be a whopper. That may keep him off the

scalding seat, but he's facing undeniable pressure in Year 5. Perhaps, he's ready to kick into gear with an experienced team. No team returned more starters than USC.

Scott Satterfield, Cincinnati: The temperature around Satterfield fluctuates like spring in the Midwest. One day it's warm, next day it's cool, then warm again.

He entered last season facing heat. Then, the Bearsats started 7-1. Ah, a nice, cool breeze.

But, wait. They finished by losing five straight, continuing Satterfield's trend for November season. Then, Clemson's got caught up in the Brendan-Sorely off-season saga. Maybe, Satterfield's just a .500 coach.

Jeff Lobby, Mississippi State: Lobby chalked up a few 'almost victories' (in that a stat?) by taking Texas, Tennessee and Florida to the brink. That's nice, but men's victories tend to dry up for a coach now entering the third season.

He needs more real W's. Athletic director Zac Swinson hired Lobby and would love to see this work, but Lobby needs to show progress.

Bill O'Brien, Boston College: What does Boston College expect out of its

football program? Seriously, that's a relevant question.

O'Brien went 2-10 last year. Obviously, the school decided that wasn't entirely the coach's fault.

Derek Mason, Middle Tennessee State: Mason's hire seemed OK in theory. He'd brought respectability to Vanderbilt up until a dreadful pandemic season that got him fired.

He's a respected defensive mind, so couldn't be succeed at a Conference USA program that had, for years, been competitive under the Blackout87. Apparently not. Mason is 6-10 after two years. That's dangerous footing.

Keep an eye on ...

Dabo Swinney, Clemson: When a legend like Swinney supplies a bad season, you don't even think about firing him. What if he has conservative bad seasons? Clemson fans widely cherish Swinney.

They'll give him a pass for last year's fixite if he refuses to, but Swinney's dynasty is finished. One of the great sign-and-develop coaches of his generation, he's struggled to adapt in the player free agency era.

Swinney, 16, says he has no plans to retire. That's guard if he wins. And if he doesn't? Swinney's resume and his 837 million buyout offer security, but a season that mirrors the last would accelerate anger.

Matt Mule, Nebraska: Athletic departments specialize in fiscal irresponsibility. Exhibit A. Nebraska, perhaps scared by Penn State's opening, gave Mule an extension and increased what it would cost to the him.

All this for a coach who's 500 through three seasons. Nebraska shows little sign of momentum, with modest projections for the season win rate.

Brent Venables, Oklahoma: Venables, facing the hot seat last season, took over play-calling for the defense. It worked. Oklahoma's defense prosplited the foosmen to the playoff, and Venables put the thermometer in the cooler.

And yet, supercalmes never were at Oklahoma or inside the SEC. Venables' tenure has lacked year-to-year consistency, and GU faces one of the nation's toughest schedules.

JT Brummett ripped a pair of RBI doubles and Brandon Marsh added an RBI double for Philadelphia, which pulled within four games of the National League East leading Atlanta Braves.

Rangers 2, Angels 1 (10 innings)

A throwing error by Denver Guzman resulted in a 2-1 walk-off win for Texas over Los Angeles to 10 innings in Arlington, Texas.

Guzman's RBI double broke the scoreless deadlock in the top of the inning, but Wyatt Langford served an 0-2 pitch from Ben Joyce (0-0) into right field and tied the game with an RBI double.

Brandon Mamon was intentionally walked to set up a force play. Although Guzman handled Escapist Donor's hard grounds to third base, his throw to get the runner at second was wide of the bag, allowing Langford to score the winning run.

Dyson, who was credited with a single on the play, had four of Texas 11 hits.

Tyler Alexander (4-2) earned the win despite giving up the go-ahead run earlier in the frame.

Both teams got stellar performances from left-handed starters who didn't factor in the decision.

Texas Mackenzie Gore had seven stakesmen to use various innings, only giving up a walk and a pair of singles.

Mariners 6, Cubs 6 (10 innings)

Leo Rivas singled home the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning as Seattle defeated visiting Chicago in the opener of a three-game interleague series.

Cal Kempill hit a three-run homer for the Mariners.

Alex Bregman homered twice and Pete Toros Armstrong and Ian Hupp also went deep for the Cubs. Bregman's solo shot with one out in the top of the ninth off Mariners closer Andrea Munro tied the score at 7-all.

Mariners relieved Seranthy Dominguez (5-0) pitched a scoreless leg of the 10th, with the Cubs' Ryan Zebrjahn (4-4) taking first.

With Randy Arosarena the runner at second to start the bottom of the 10th, Victor Belden put down a successful sacrifice-hunt. Zebrjahn got Julio Rodriguez to honour back to the mound and walked Josh Naylor intentionally to bring up the light hitting Rivas, who entered as a pinch-runner for Taylor Ward in the eighth. Rivas hired an 0-1 هجوم into center field to score Arosarena.

Marlins 3, Nationals 2

Victor Sancia grounded a haem-loaded single post a drawer in infield in the bottom of the ninth, giving next Miami a walk-off win over Washington.

Before Sancaja's heroics, Washington was down to his final strike in the top of the ninth when Daylen Lile tied the score with an RBI single.

Korbett Reis provided Washington's early offeree with a home run in the sixth.

Neither starting pitcher - Washington's final 2-4 for Miami's Ryan Gustazarand a decision as both of them pitched scoreless baseball but failed to last longer than four innings.

The Nationals finally opened the scoring on the sixth on Ruiz's solo homer to right off of relieved Tyler Zuber.

Brewers 2, Braves 1

Jacob Mniszewski pitched six shut-out stintings and outfitted Chris Sale in a matching of 7-3' living candidates as Milwaukee beat visiting Atlanta.

Mniszewski (2-0) allowed four hits with two walks and six stakesmen. Antonio Senzatela gave up one run over two innings. Nebier Trevor Megill worked around a two-out single in the ninth for his 24th save.

William Contreras had four hits and three run run for Milwaukee, which won for the fifth time in its last six games.

Atlanta brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the ninth after Mike Turtisowski singled with two outs. Pinch runner Luis Thomas stole second before Megill struck out Ronald Acuna Jr. to win the opener of the three-game series.

Michael Harris II and Mauricio Dubon had two hits apiece for Atlanta, which lost for the fourth time in its last five games.

Sale (2-0) yielded two runs on eight hits over six innings. He struck out six with no walks.

White Sox 6, Mets 4

Jake Rogers balled a two-run, walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth and Miguel Vargas, Randal Grichuk and Colton Montgomery hit three straight homers in the sixth as host Chicago debated New York.

Rogers reached Jelly Yae (8-0) with two outs and a runner on third. Grant Taylor (5-2) worked around a loaded walk in the top of the ninth to earn the victory.

American League Central-leading Chicago traded 4-0 before a sixth-inning homage against Mets left-hander from Manava.

Manava strymed the White Sox through five innings before scuffling during his third time through the order. He issued a one-out walk in the sixth before allowing three straight homers, the first a two-run blast by Vargas. The veteran left-hander spurred four runs and five hits in six innings with two walks and four stakesmen.

Chicago counterpart Sean Burke also took a no-decision while remaining in search of his first victory since July 39.

Red Sox 6, Giants 4

Wilyar Almas went 3-for-4 with an RBI triple while William Contreras crushed a three-run home run to highlight a five-run third inning for Boston in a win over visiting San Francisco.

Ceddiamo Rafaela and James Duran also had ninth-let games for the Red Sox, who hanged out DMG in the opener of a three-game series. Boston pitchers allowed only two times from Peter De final 5-0 in those innings, helping the team post the third win in four games.

Red Sox starter Sonny Gray (8-3) worked six innings, allowing four runs on seven hits. He struck out six and walked two while tying the Philadelphia Phillies' Cristopher Sanchez for the major league lead in wins.

San Francisco's Drew Gilbert (2-for-5) and Rafael Deveris hit back-to-back homers in the fourth.

Deveris finished 6-for-3 with a walk in his return to Boston, where he spent the first eight-plus seasons of his career.

Charlson Kees produced two hits and two runs for the Giants, who have lost four of their past five games.

Yankees 3, Blue Jays 1

Spencer Jones hit a two-run homer in the second inning and New York extended its winning streak to five games with a victory over visiting Toronto.

The Yankees won for the ninth time in their past 15 games thanks to Jones' seventh homer. A night after hitting an opposite field homer to left center in Baltimore, Jones put the Yankees up 2-0 with a drive-off Spencer, knighted 17-0, that just stayed fair by a few inches inside the right field pair.

The ball went about halfway up the second deck in right field. As the ball reached the state, Toronto manager John Schindler called for a replay review and the call was upheld.

It marked the second time the outfielder homered in consecutive games as he also connected July 31-Aug. 1 against the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

Jones' homer gave the Yankees the early lead on a night when starter Cain Schittler (8-6) faced constant pressure. Schittler allowed one run on six hits in six innings and earned his first victory since July 24 at Philadelphia.

Orioles 5, Rays 3

Dylan Beavers homered for the third game in a row and Pete Alonso's 3DG home run of the season broke a tie to spark Baltimore past visiting Tampa Bay in the opener of a three-game series.

Alonso's two-run blast broke a tie with two outs in the fifth inning to help the Orioles win a four-game losing streak that began with Monday night's loss at Tampa Bay.

But now the Orioles have won four games against the Rays in an eight-night stretch.

Baltimore starter Trevor Rogers pitched seven innings for the victory. Alonso, who has a career best 10-game hitting streak, and Orioles Clowest each had two hits for the Orioles.

Sonny Piper, a catcher in his second career big-league game, honored for the Rays, whose nine-game road winning streak was snapped.

Junior Cummers and Ryan Vilske had two hits apiece for American League-best Tampa Bay, which has lost six of its last eight games.

Royals 5, Tigers 2

Noah Cameron loosed five scoreless innings, while Kyle Isbel, Vinnie Pasqualetto and Carter Jensen each hit a solo home run, as host Kansas City debated Detroit to win its season-high sixth straight game.

Though Cameron (8-6) wasn't as dominant as Sunday, during his complete-game one-fifth against the Los Angeles Angels, he kept the Tigers at bay. The left-hander only yielded singles to four-5x last and Kevin McGonigle and overcome three walks to keep Detroit off the scoreboard.

Meanwhile, Isbel and Pasqualetto each had two hits and combined for three fifth, while Kelly Witt Jr. also co-ordered a pair of hits for the Royals.

McGonigle had two hits with an RBI for the Tigers, who have lost three straight and six in the first. Detroit's Pete Melton (7-2) allowed three runs - two earned - plus six hits and three walks with three stakesmen over 5 innings.

Neither team could get anything going against Cameron and Melton through the first innings.

Padres 6, Twins 2

Ty France homered and knocked in three runs while Randy Vasquez nailed through seven innings as San Diego knocked off visiting Minnesota.

Vasquez (9-6) allowed only two hits and two runs, walking nose and banning there, in an 87-pitch effort. It was only the fourth time a San Diego starter completed seven innings this year - twice each by Vasquez and Michael King.

Connor Phillips (7-5) absorbed the loss, allowing a 2-1 win for the first and two walks in six innings with seven strikeouts. White Sox (Dogo) maintained its grip on the National League's final walk-out spot. Mniszewski felt a game behind Texas for the American League's final wild-card position.

The game was tied at 2-2 in the fifth when the Padres touched Phillips for four runs. Austin Hays led off with an infield single and Jake Gustazarand, drew a one-out walk.

That was followed by consecutive RBI singles from Fernando Yelin Jr., Luis Rengifo and Murray Machado. France staged the sixth-while a sacrifice fly.

Astros 4, Athletics 0

Hayden Wenneki logged five scoreless innings of one-hit ball, Yordan Alvarez and Isaac Pasekis posted consecutive RBI doubles in the fifth and Houston claimed the opener of a three-game situation as series against the visiting Athletics.

Alvarez finished 2-for-5 with two run-scoring doubles for the Astros, who improved to 3-4 on their nine-game homestead against American League West opponents.

Pasekis walked and eventually scored on a Christian Walker sacrifice fly to one the first in the fourth, breaking a scoreless tie. Athletics right-hander JT Ginn (8-6) attended two baserunners in the first and faced the minimum in the second and third.

However, the Astros called with two outs in the fifth. Alvarez scored a double to right-center-field gap, a sharp line drive that scored Nick Allen from first base after Allen worked a one-out walk. Pasekis, who finished 3-for-3 with a walk, followed with a double that plated Alvarez for a 3-0 lead.

Guardians 9, Rockies 1

Petey Halpin and Patrick Bailey homered, rookie Travis Ramana led his career high with four hits, and Cleveland lead Colorado in Denver.

Bailey also doubled while Jo Adell and Nathansel Gore had two hits each for Cleveland, which remained a game behind the Texas leagues for the final American League wild-card position.

Four Guardians relievers, led by Tim Herdin (4-2), delivered in scoreless innings. Herdin got four outs after starter Sary Castillo pitched 4-0 innings. Castillo permitted one run on four hits and four walks while striking out five as Cleveland earned its third win in four games.

Tanner Gordon (0-4) allowed five runs on nine hits in 5S innings for the Rockies, who have dropped the first four games of their six game homestead.

Colorado manager just five hits but walked seven times. Kyle Karros singled and walked in his series from a commission. Catcher Brett Zilliman recorded the final two outs in the ninth in his seventh mound appearance of the season.

Diamondbacks 5, Reds 0

Jordan Lankie homered and posted career high with three hits and three RBIs as Arizona struck early to beat Cincinnati in Phoenix.

Colorado Panthers had three hits, scored twice and had an RBI for the D-backs, and Gabriel Moreno had two hits and an RBI while extending his career-best hitting stakes. At 14 games, Yordan Lankie led a 2-for-3 with a 2-1 win while a base on his 26th birthday, and Tim Yates added two hits and an RBI.

Arizona starter Eduardo Rodriguez (2) 4-game up-four hits, although, in 5S innings while striking out four and walking two. He won his third straight start and improved to 6-2 since July 31.

Rodriguez left when his sixth count reached 99 after issuing a two-out walk to Eugene Alvarez in the ninth, finishing one-out start. A test of the quality start.

The D-backs, who played their fourth game without injured Keith Marsh, have won two in a row. Cincinnati took its sixth loss in eight games.

Cincinnati's TJ Friedl broke an 0-for-3D skid with a fifth-inning single.

Yamashita builds 5-shot lead in Edmonton

Miyu Yamashita of Japan extended her lead to five-shots at the CPKC Women's Open on Friday in Edmonton.

Yamashita followed her opening-round 62 with a 6-under 64 and will enter the weekend at 14-under 126 at Royal Mayfair Golf Club. Her nearest competition comes from South Korea's Soo Bin Joo (60), Japan's Yuri Yoshida (66) and Klara Romero (67) tied at 9 under.

Yamashita, 35, is searching for her fourth LPGA Tour title in a span of less than 15 months. After she took the 2025 AIG Women's Open as a rookie, she has added two more victories, including the Metier LPGA Classic this past June.

After a birdie-hogey start to her day, she piled up six birdies between No. 4-12 to race in front.

"Rather than focus on the score, I'm thinking about how I can make birdies," Yamashita said afterward. "So I will try to keep a good rhythm in the final round."

Joo's bogey-free 63 was the round of the day. She hit 35 of 18 greens in regulation and needed just 26 putts to get around the course. But she is under no pretense that the tournament will remain a birdie fest.

"The sun is coming out, the winds are picking up this afternoon, so I think it will get firmer and faster during the weekend, and looking forward to it," Joo said.

The story of the week may be Romero, a longtime amateur and college star who is making her professional debut. She started off with a bang on Thursday with a round of 64 and followed that in the second round with five birdies and two bogeys.

Right now I'm just really focusing on having fun and just enjoying - I mean, it's only first tournament as a professional, so I think it can be tough, the transition from college golf pro golf, so just to make it in little prevailing for me as possible," Romero said. "I just want to go out there and just try to take this as a learning experience and try to just ground my feet out there."

Running Yin of China (67) and Nasa Hataoka of Japan (69) are tied for fifth at 8 under.

The first Canadian through two rounds is Anna Huang, who shot 68 Friday and is tied at 7 under alongside Laurey Frye (67), Gina Kim (67), Malaysia's Natasha Han (65) and Mao Saigo of Japan (67). Defending champion Brooke M. Henderson of Canada is further behind at 5 under following a round of 68.

"It's so amazing and such a cool opportunity to be able to play in front of all the Canadian fans. They just show me so much love and support year after year... It only really happens once a year, and it's just such a unique thing that not a lot of players get to experience. I'm definitely trying to make the most of it."

LIV Golf

While LIV Golf Indianapolis will double as the team championship for 2026, the player, atop the individual leaderboard is an unaffiliated wild card.

Richard T. Lee of Canada moved in front after 36 holes thanks to his second-round, 4-under 66 at The Club at Chatham Hills in Westfield, Ind.

Lee, 35, is in his first season with LIV Golf after he won the league's promotions event in Florida last winter. Lee called the season "a dream come true" Friday, despite LIV's uncertain future in the wake of the Sandi Public Investment Fund withdrawing their backing after this year.

"Coming out here, just having everything I want and everything I need. The courses are spectacular, and the conditions are amazing," Lee said. "People are nice. Just being on a tour like this is just a dream come true."

Lee shot a 7-under 63 in the first round, putting him one behind Cautier. He birdied three of his first five holes and four of his first seven on Friday to wage in front. After consecutive bogeys at No. 9-10, he regained those two strokes with birdies at No. 21 and 14.

"I don't want to think too ahead for myself, but yeah, definitely a victory would be amazing," said Lee, a journeyman who has only won on the Asian and Korean tours. "It's always been a dream

to play with these guys and have a big victory out there."

Johnson hasn't won a LIV event since February 2024 in Las Vegas. That could change come Sunday after he finished with three birdies in his last five holes Friday to put himself in the tie for second.

"I felt like I've been swinging it well, like throughout the year. Just hadn't really put anything together," Johnson said. "I'm starting to drive it well, and I'm hitting my irons good. The game has always been close, now just got a little more confidence in the game, and I'm playing nicely."

Johnson has another goal to chase. The team he captains, 44cos GC, holds a five-shot lead at 31 under par over two rounds. Torque GC, captained by Club's Joaquin Nemanini, is second at 26 under.

Due to the cancellation of the LIV Golf Team Championship in Michigan, the winning squad this week will take home the season-long team title.

"Obviously we've got a really good team," Johnson said. "... We've got one more event left, two more days, so a lot can happen. But we're in a good position right now."

Detry, one of Johnson's teammates, helped lift 44cos with a 64 that featured seven birdies. Another Belgian, Thomas Partee, shot 65 Friday for 44cos and is tied for fifth at 9 under.

Also tied for fifth at 9 under is Michael La Sasso, a 22-year-old rookie who fired a 20-under par 60 on Friday. La Sasso started his round on No. 15 and birdied nine of his first 14 holes to make a sub-60 round a distinct possibility. After three straight pars, he settled for a closing birdie at the par 5 left.

Asked whether there was a point he sensed it would be a special round, La Sasso replied, "Yeah, and then I started leaving (putto) short 25. I'm busy how that works."

"No, just kind of sticking to what we were talking about. I definitely thought about it a little bit, and then a couple more putts started to drop, and it was

like, 'Wow, this could be real.'"

PGA Tour Champions

Australian Richard Green and American Beth Labetta are tied atop the leaderboard at the Rogers Charity Classic after shooting matching 7-under 6th in Calgary, Alberta.

At the only Champions Tour event held annually in Canada, Labetta sought out to an early advantage, making six birdies even his first 27 holes before grabbing one more on the final hole to wrap his bogey-free day.

"I lost my full status two years ago, so I've been grinding back the last few years," Labetta said after the round. "We started out with a nice round today, 63, I feel good, body feels good. I'm ready to go one shot at a time and just see where it ends. But, started out the way I wanted to."

That could have been enough for sole possession of the first-round lead at Canyon Meadows Golf and Country Club, had defending champion Green not capped his five-birdie day with an eagle on 18.

It was a welcome development for the 55-year-old Green, who despite five top-10 finishes this year hasn't managed to duplicate last year's win at this event - his lone PGA Tour Champions title-sizes.

Labetta, also 55, hasn't competed in the same volume of events this season and has yet to finish higher than a tie for 16th.

Seven more players are within two shots of the lead.

Spaier's Miguel Angel Jimenez is a stroke back alone in third at 6-under. His day began with four birdies over the front nine before he cooled a touch with three birdies and a bogey on the back.

Six golfers are tied for fourth at 5 under. That group included Michael Allen, Jason Caron, Ryan Armour, Jerry Kelly, Michael Block, and Thailand's Thongchai Jaides.

Mike Weir is the top Canadian after the first round, tied for 27th at 3 under.

"I would say almost regardless of where I'm at, top of the FedEx Cup or on the brittle, I don't really think about it," said Cantlay, the 2021 FedEx Cup champion. "I definitely know the best way to

move up that board is to play well this week and so I just put all my attention there."

Northern Ireland's Bory McIlroy dropped from a share of the lead to a tie for eighth at 7 under after posting a 49 Friday. He's joined by Collin Morkawa (65), Russell Hestery (66) and Maverick McBeady (66).

World No. 1 and FedEx Cup leader Scottie Scheffler bounced back from an opening 72 to post 65. That moved him to 3 under for the week, tied for 25th. There is no 36-hole cut in the three play-off events.

Scheffler carded two bogeys and two bounce-back birdies on the front nine before coming home in 5-under 30.

Taylor's late treys lift Sky past Valkyries

Sydney Taylor drilled game-lying and go-ahead 3-pointers in the final 34.4 seconds, and the Chicago Sky – after blowing a 21-point lead – survived a frantic finish to shock the visiting Golden State Valkyries 73-70 Friday night.

Kadlyn Chen had knocked down a tightening triple from 33 feet for the Valkyries, and soon after she added a floater to put them ahead 70-67 with 46.5 seconds left. The half found its way to Taylor at the top of the key, and she drilled a 26-footer to tie the score with 34.4 seconds to go.

The Valkyries, who played mostly reserves in the second half after their starting unit was generally unproductive such as, then put the ball in Chen's hands again, but she was harassed into a short-range aithall with 15.8 seconds remaining.

Chicago 10-21 then called a timeout and followed the ball to Taylor, who got enough of an opening over Golden State defensive ace Veronica Burton to bury a 25-footer with 0.4 seconds left.

The Valkyries (25-18) who were tipping off a five-game trip, used a timeout to design a play for expected, handle failure, and she got a good look at a looser-betting 26-footer that came up just short.

Isabelle Harrison had 25 points and 10 rebounds as Toronto snapped a 12-game losing streak with a win over Portland in Vancouver.
