MONTREAL — When President Donald Trump levied 50% tariffs on Canadian steel in June last year, a steel factory in Canada's mostly French-speaking province of Quebec lost about a third of its orders for hefts and fasteners in less than a week.

The factory owner — The Heico Companies — froze hiring, closed a plant in the region and laid off several dozen people, said David Jeannette, an operations director, whose own brother lost his job. The cuts were part of 160 layoffs by the company, mainly in Quebec.

The factory's troubles reflect broader anxiety over the fallout from Trump's trade war in Quebec, which is due to hold a provincial election by Oct. 5. But while some previous economic slowdowns in the province prompted an increase in separatist sentiment, polls show that this time around, support for an independent Quebec is at its lowest level in decades, at about 30%.

'As long as Trump will be in his chair, I don't feel that we even need to talk about that,' Jeannette said.

Where in the region are echoing Jeannette's concerns, saying the threat Trump poses to Canada means the best way to preserve Quebec's unique French culture is to stay within Canada — at least for now.

Trump's threats to make Canada the 51st state and the whiplash from his tariff policy have spurred an outpouring of Canadian patriotism in Quebec, a province that regularly threatens to break away and has had two previous reform-dums on the issue.

As the country's only majority French-speaking province, Quebec has a long-established separatist movement that argues independence from Canada is the best way to protect its distinct culture and language. Quebec has never formally signed the Canadian Constitution and separatists argue French Canadians are often overlooked by the English-dominated majority.

'Campaign of Fear'

The separatist Parti Québécois currently holds a slim lead in provincial election polls and a win would mark the party's return to power after a dozen years. But analysts say a vote for the party would be more about disappointment with the riding party than an endorsement of the PQ's independence platform.

While the PQ is committed to a third independence referendum if it wins, leader Paul de Pierre Flamorden vowed that won't happen while Trump is president, a lead recognition of falling support for independence.

Carney vows to hit back with retaliatory levies

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Aug. 22 that Canada would impose tariffs starting Sept. 8 on imports of U.S. steel, electronics and other products in retaliation for President Donald Trump's 50% tariffs that took effect at midnight.

After days of intense negotiations, the two countries did not reach a trade deal late Aug. 21, worsening a delicate relationship between the longtime trade partners and allies and complicating the future of the continental free trade pact known as the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement.

Trump's new tariffs hit sectors including wine, furniture, dairy products, cement, clothing, fishing rods and hockey equipment and covers some $20 billion of Canadian exports to the United States. These duties do not exempt Canadian products under the USMCA, which has abolished most Canadian exports to the United States in the last 18 months.

'Canada will match Washington's new tariffs dollar for dollar in order to protect Canadian workers, farmers,

families and businesses,' Carney told a news conference:

'You're at war when you get attacked. We got attacked,' Carney said when asked a question about whether Canada

was engaged in a trade war.

Carney is one of the few global leaders to retaliate against U.S. tariffs and has pledged to feign new trade and military alliances, despite Canada's dependence on the United States for nearly 70% of its exports.

Canada will impose tariffs on U.S. steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics, along with some products the United States previously targeted in Canada, Carney said from Ottawa's Parliament building.

The government will release details on its response in the coming days, he said.

'We cannot accept what they have offered, and we will not give what they have asked,' Carney said.

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump has vowed to hit Iran hard economically, after Treasury Secretary Scott Brezent said that Washington would impose measures on Tehran that have 'never been seen' as soon as this coming week.

Bresent is due to hold a news conference on Aug. 24.

The United States, U.N. and EU have applied sanctions, implemented trade exchanges and frozen assets since the late 1970s over Iran's nuclear program, human rights violations and support for militant groups.

Since the Iran war began in February, Washington has levied additional maritime, energy and financial sanctions and started a naval blockade.

Data from the U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control shows the agency has imposed sanctions on more than 1,000 people, vessels and aircraft since Trump began his second term.

Recent measures have targeted Iran's shadow of fleet, shipping measures, entities and people enabling Iran's acquisition of weapons; and digital exchanges, freezing an estimated $300 billion in Iran-linked cryptocurrency.

Iran has denounced U.S. plans to announce new sanctions that could put further strain on the Islamic Republic's economy.

Oil shipments are at a virtual standstill in the Head of Hormuz, with Tehran threatening to strike any unauthorized oil tankers that try to transit the vital waterway, and Iran's economy is already under immense pressure from

sanctions.

Europe’s hottest town says climate change reshaping life

FLORIDA, Italy — Five years after Florida registered Europe’s highest-ever temperature, residents say extreme heat is no longer measured by records but by its impact on daily life, keeping people indoors, reducing social interaction and threatening livelihoods.

The August 2021 record of 2014 degrees Fahrenheit turned the Sicilian town into a symbol of Europe’s warming climate as the continent emerged from COVID-19 restrictions.

Today, increasingly frequent and prolonged heat waves are driving people indoors, leaving streets and piazzas deserted and prompting some residents to compare the extreme heat to new form of lockdown.

The shift in visible across the town of 20,000 on the outskirts of Syracuse, the ancient town city on Sicily’s southeastern coast. Piazza del Popolo, long Florida’s social hub and band with rocks, paint trees and municipal buildings, is a nearly empty much of the day.

Even people with small children find themselves in the situation. Children cannot go to the park or play outside because, until like afternoon, temperatures are genuinely hostile.

Many residents assumed the record would prove an incident event. Instead, hot summers became the norm.

“It turned out to be a very sad warming sign,” Spada said.

While the temperature record drew international attention, climate scientists say individual extremes are less significant than the steady rise in average temperatures.

“It is really the increase in average temperature that worries us,” said ISAK Director, HighNorth.

“We are no longer talking about extreme temperature peaks during one or two days, as happened in 2020. We are talking about entire weeks, even months during which temperatures remain consistently high.”

Nighttime temperatures are climbing too, leaving little respite from the daytime heat.

Across Europe, climate change has been linked to increasingly frequent and intense weather extremes, from drought and wildflow to terrestrial rainfall. Sicily has emerged as one of Europe’s climate front lines.

In January, Cyclone Harry produced a record 50-foot wave between Sicily and Malta. Wallflows have taken the strong toll with the island accounting for roughly 70% of southern Italy’s houses were between January and July, according to a Copenhagen institute based on EPFIS–Copernicus data.

Agriculture, a pillar of the island’s economy, is increasingly vulnerable to climate change.

In 2022, more than 3,000 bedtones were lost in the area of Florida and almost productive plunged by 80%.

Frank Beard 77. the Texas-beard dissident for 32 Top for 50 years, died Aug. 7 while in brague care at his ranch in Richmond, Texas. Before 22 Top, singer and guitarist Billy Gibbons and Bob)+dramatic Dan Hibshall formed The Moving Ridowalla and dropped the album “Fluid” in 1969. After a change in personnel, the pair formed 32 Top. Beard was integrated into the band in 1971 along with bassist Dany Hill. The trio of Beard, Gibbons and Hill concerted a message tour of blues, bongie and rock that landed them on the charts throughout the 1970s with goggy, guitar-powered hits “La Grange” and “Tank.” But it was their end: Win MTV era smash albums “Eliminator” and “Al-midnator” that catapulted the band into Japanese music. Stanley “Skiig” Bertman, 88, one of the major bands of the baseball band the school’s athletics department, died Aug. 14. In 10 years as LSU’s band baseball coach from 1984 to 2001, Bertman led the Tigers to five College World Series championships along with seven toothmothers Conference titles. LSU won 870 games under Bertman, who had an impressive 724 won percentage. Over his 10 years as the bands to the LSU baseball team, Bertman coached 40 players with under 8 into Major League

Baseball. After stepping down as LSU baseball coach, Bertman moved into an administrative career and assumed the role of athletics director at LSU.

Tommy John, 10, who won 288 games over a 20-year MLB career, died Aug. 15. John gaged for six teams from 1984 to 1989. He spent eight years with the New York Yankees, seven with the Chicago White Sox and six with the Los Angeles Dodgers. John won 10 games as a Yankee, 87 for LA and 63 with the White Sox. He is also known as the namesake of a pioneering surgery after suffering a heart UCL in 1974. The procedure, in which a tendon was taken from the wrist and placed in the elbow, gave John his career back and has become commendable in saving pitches from leaving their baseball into end.

Christy Knowlings, 48, best known for her work as a child as he on the Nickelodeon show “All That,” died Aug. 3. A relative of Knowlings told TMD that the actress was hospitalized following an asthma attack on Aug. 7 and got on life support. The New York City-born actress placed various roles, including opposite Amanda Bryan in the recurring “Whismerer” segment and as newscaster Brenda Stone in “Channel 40, News,” in her three seasons on the children’s sketch comedy series “All That.” Knowlings was on the program from 1997 to 2000, according to her IMDB page.

She also appeared in three episodes of “Invasion Street” between 2008 and 2010, acting alongside her twin brother, Chris Knowlings.

Dave Marsh, 76, an early Bruce Springsteen biographer and down at music critics, died Aug. 14. Marsh wrote what is considered far first biography of Springsteen, 1979’s “Born to Run: The Bruce Springsteen Story,” as well as 1987’s “Glory Days: Bruce Springsteen in the 1980s” and 2003’s “Bruce Springsteen: Two Hearts: The Definitive Biography, 1972-2003.” He was part of a generation of 1979s on music critics who extolled rock ’n’ roll in a more scholarly way than previous critics. Yet Marsh was one of the few from the era to show that the game was part of a diverse international music tiredness included R&B soul, gospel and more. The Detroit native also wrote books on music icons. The Who, George Clinton, 30, and the Family Home, The Beatles and others.

Hayden Panetttere, 36, a former child actress best known for her roles as TV series like “Heroes” and “Nashville,” died Aug. 30. A cause of death has not yet been shared. The actress, whose long and prolific career in TV and film began when she was a baby, had been vocal in recent years about her troubles with addiction and the effects of childhood stardom. Bill Rasmussen, 93, the founder of ESPN, the former 1970s first-filmd and Parkinson’s disease, the network announced. Rasmussen and his own Scott began exploring the idea of a sports-only television network in 1976, using emerging satellite technology. ESPN was launched on Sep. 7, 1979, in 4 million homes, with SportsCenter as its opening program. TX seeks airport washing facility probe

Muslim group denounces move as 'political stunt'

WASHINGTON — Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Aug. 22 sought a federal probe into airport facilities for ritual washing before the 1980s, and was one of the Muslim advocacy group called an 'anti-Muslim political stunt.'

In a letter to the Department of Justice, Abbott called on the department to immediately review the ablution facilities at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, casting them an discriminatory.

"Because the airports receive federal funds, they are subject to numerous conditions attached to that funding — including the requirement to comply with all applicable laws prohibiting discrimination," Abbott's office said in a statement.

Many Muslims wash their faces, arms and legs before daily prayers.

"These are not Muslim-only spaces any more than a nursing room or an interfaith prayer room in Christian-only

cessible public infrastructure looks like," CAIR Texas said in a statement.

Earlier in August, Abbott referred the airports to U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy for investigation and threatened to revoke state funding.

Following that referral, Abbott said,

DFW abandoned its plans to install more ablution facilities. The airport said this past week that officials had "determined the originally anticipated benefit may not be achieved" if the stations were built.

There are about 4.5 million Muslims in the United States, including more than 300,000 in Texas, the World Population Review says.

A delayed Quebec sovereignty vote would be one less headache for Liberal Prime Minister Mark Carney, who himself upended polls favoring the Conservatives to win a national election last year after promising to be a tough negotiator with Trump.

Carney faces another separatist movement in oil-rich Alberta, which has its own reformulate scheduled for mid-October. While conservative Alberta's burgeoning independence movement aligns with Trump's brand of conservatism, Quebecers have largely supported the rest of Canada in pressing back against the U.S. president's tariffs and threats of annexation.

Trump's conservative policies as well as his administration's comments that the province's language requirements are a "trade irritant" are both impopular.

The financial impact from his policies is also strongly felt in Quebec and comments note the province is among the worst hit by Trump's tariffs, given its concentration of industries like steel and aluminum. A March report from the Bank of Montreal estimated Quebec's economy would grow about 19,000 years compared to more than 2% for Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Jeannotte said that before Trump levied tariffs on Canadian steel, about 90% of his factory's products were destined for the United States, with its hold-up of New York's Empire State Building. Jeannotte said some staffers were without pay on some days and others have voluntarily reduced their hours.

At the negotiating table

Still, some Quebec separatists say independence remains critical, even now. Marie-Anne Alepin, president of the separatist Society, said that the Baptiste de Montréal, said Carney's decision to eliminate a tax that helps finance Canadian programming would cut funding for Quebec's French-language production, highlighting that as an example of why the province should become independent. Others has pledged to replace the tax with government funding.

"Canada is not capable of defending Quebec's interests," Alepin said. "Quebec's has to be at the negotiating table and to do that, we have to be a country."

Vincent Rainville, a fourth-generation Quebec dairy farmer who owns more than 250 cows, disagreed, saying Trump's policies have complicated efforts to strengthen Quebec's economy and that a national response is required.

"It's not just Quebec, it's all of Canada and all our industries that have been affected," he said. "If I supported an independent Quebec, I would not want to talk about that policy now."

"In recent days, the U.S. proposed new terms that were uncommon, unfair and unhominated the net benefits to Canada, calling into question the reliability of any deal," he said, adding these demands included curtailing Canada's ability to forgo new trade deals.

Carney said Canada would announce support measures like coming week for industries impacted by the new U.S. duties, adding these measures could last years.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer told Fox News on Aug. 22 that no new talks are planned with Canada.

"We're moving forward with measures that respond to Canadian retaliations," Greer said. "They've always had the best deal, and they still would have to even better deal, but they didn't want that."

The White House, the U.S. commerce secretary's office and the U.S. trade representative's office did not immediately respond to requests for comments.

The new U.S. tariffs cover around 5% of Canada's exports to the United States. They could expose some vulnerable industries such as softwood lumber and mine to severe damage and lead to pit losses and business closures, trade experts have said.

"We will be mobilizing our network of

businesses in all regions and all sectors to brace for impact and make the best of a bad situation," said Candace Laing, CEO of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.

Ontario Premier Doug Poul, one of the most vocal opponents of U.S. tariffs, supported Carney's decision to retaliate.

"I'm glad he didn't sign that deal because it was a bad deal. It was a bad deal for Ontario. It was a bad deal for the anti-sector, the steel sector and manufacturing sector," Poul told reporters Aug. 22.

One of the main sticking points was the treatment of larger vehicles.

Three sources said Canada wanted favorable tariff terms proposed to light-duty vehicles to extend to medium- and heavy-duty trucks, something the United States resisted. Carney said the U.S.

position would have excluded Canadian-made models, including Fool's F-300, F-450 and F-550 trucks and General Motors' Silverado, making Canadian production less competitive.

There were also U.S. proposals that affected Canadian cities, language and sovereignty, Carney said, without elaborating.

Carney was elected last year on a premise to be a tough negotiator with Trump, and remains broadly popular. Polls show most Canadians oppose making any concessions to the United States.

"Canadians must stand united to defend our country against these unfair attacks on our jobs and businesses," Pierre Podivore, the leader of the official opposition Conservative Party, said in a statement.

Fast U.S. sanctions have deterred larger independent refusers from buying Iranian oil. But the independent refusers are somewhat immune since they have little exposure to the U.S. financial system, sanctions experts say.

Sanctions on Chinese banks

The Office of Foreign Assets Control has imposed secondary sanctions on smaller China- and Hong Kong-based entities accused of preventing billions of dollars in Iranian oil and helping to fund weapons procurement.

The Treasury Department has warned two larger Chinese banks they could face secondary sanctions if Iran—a funds were found moving through their systems, but has stopped short of designating them.

Hiding those two banks, which U.S.

officials have not publicly identified, or imposing other sanctions could have a chasing effect on bigger financial institutions, sanctions experts said, although they wanted it could also trigger retaliatory actions by Beijing.

Trump administration officials have sought to play down tensions between Washington and Beijing ahead of an expected meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping later this year. They worry that China could curtail exports of critical minerals that are essential in advanced technology production at a time when the United States and Western allies are still trying to develop their own supplies.

'Whack-a-mole'

The United States could continue targeting Iranian individuals and entities, as well as others in China and the Gulf, that are helping Tehran evade sanctions to collect revenues for its war effort.

The Treasury Department recently issued sanctions against firms that are upropping up to facilitate Iran's trading of oil revenue for imports. But such measures amount to a 'whack-a-mole'

approach that has not altered their behavior, said Brett Erickson, managing principal of Shinkah's risk. Adversus, noting that Tehran simply creates new entities to replace them.

The Senate passed a sweeping Russia sanctions bill earlier in August that included new Iran sanctions and would give Trump new tariff powers that he could potentially see against countries that are black commerce and weapons procurement.

That legislation must still pass the House of Representatives, which could prove challenging, gives widespread concerns among Democrats and some Republicans about the tariff measures.

Wyndham Clark expects to have familiar emotions as he tries to close out the BMW Championship with a victory.

Clark shot 5-under 65 to expand his lead Saturday in St. Louis.

"I always sleep good (the night before a final round)," Clark said. "But it's more the angel when you wake up. That's usually when I feel it. You wake up and you have that little pit in your stomach, you're excited to go play, and you wish you were teeing off right as you wake up so you didn't have to think about it."

Clark, the U.S. Open champion earlier this year, moved to 27-under 190 for a five-stroke advantage over Patrick Cantlay and Northern Ireland's Rory Molloy at Bellerive Country Club, where the second stop of those tournaments in the FedEx Cup playoffs is being contested.

Based on the tournament's current packing order, a victory could move Clark all the way up to the No. 3 spot in the standings.

Job security in the NFL is effectively nonexistent. Whether you're a player, executive or - certainly - a coach, just about everyone, no matter how good or established, is on borrowed time.

This year's head coaching cycle unfolded as a hugely active one, 10 jobs changing hands - tied for the most ever in one offseason. Even long-established winners like Mike Tomlin, John Harbaugh and Sean McDermott chose to move on or were compelled to do so. Pete Carroll, one of three men ever to win a Super Bowl and college national championship, only lasted a year in Las Vegas. Two-time Coach of the Year Kevin Stefanski was shown the door in Cleveland, though another opened for him in Atlanta.

The takeaway? Whether young, old, entrenched or not, NFL head coaches know the mandate - regardless of circumstances. Win or else. Strand, an undrafted rookie out of Minnesota State-Moorhead, made a strong case to be Atlanta's third-string quarterback behind Michael Perin Jr. and Tsu Tagovailou - who are still battling for the starting job and both are against the Colts. Strand completed 12 of 9 passes for 212 yards, including a 15-yard score to follow rookie Cash Jones, and scampered for a 16-yard score early in the third quarter.

Cooper Rush, who got the start for the Falcons (3-1), also impressed, completing 10 of 8 passes for 96 yards. Running backs Tyler Goodson (59 yards) and Nathan Carter (42 yards) also added rushing touchdowns for Atlanta, which outgained Indianapolis 468-304.

The Colts (0-3-2) got all of their points from a pair of Spencer Shuster field goals and struggled to generate much offense with their reserve quarterbacks, converting 5 of 3 third-down attempts. Of Indianapolis' 79 passing yards from reserves Billy Leonard and Anthony Richardson Sr., 39 of them came on a single completion to Coleman Owen.

Lions 17, Commanders 13

Detroit rested its starters but used rushing touchdowns from Joshua Dobbs and Trayveen Williams to come away with a win over visiting Washington.

Dobbs, the backup quarterback for the Lions (3-1) behind Janet Goff, had an eventful first quarter, with his first drive ending on a strip-sack, his second on an interception and his third on a 50-yard touchdown run. Rookie third-stringer Luke Altmyer got the majority of the reps, completing 9 of 13 passes for 96 yards.

Jayden Daniels, looking to bounce back from an injury-plagued 2023 season, played one series for the Commanders (3-1). He threw one incomplete pass and was sacked once. Rookie linebacker Joshua Douglas scored Washington's lane touchdown by recovering Dobbs' hands in the end zone. 31 seconds into the game.

Washington rookie kicker Drew Stevens, whom the team chose over veteran Jake Moody earlier this week, made both of his field-goal attempts. Detroit kicker Jake Bates made one of two field-goal attempts.

Bills 31, Browns 7

Rookie receiver LeMon Maclin had 108 receiving yards and a touchdown catch to spark Buffalo's road demolition of Cleveland.

Kyle Allen (50-for-12, 128 yards) and Shane Buechele (5-for-10, 20 yards) such threw a touchdown pass for the Bills (2-0), who outscored the Browns 27-0 in

the second half. Maclin's 75-yard catch-and-run score made it 24-7 late in the third quarter. Frank Gore Jr., the son of the former Bills running back, ran for 54 yards, just behind Ian Wheeler's game-high 56 rushing yards.

The quarterback battle for Cleveland (0-2) seems to have narrowed to Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson, with Office Gabriel attempting just one base late in the loss. Neither had a particularly strong day, but Sanders (9-for-11, 74 yards, one touchdown, one interception) had a better showing than Watson (5-for-12, 36 yards, one pick). Luke Florinck's first-quarter touchdown catch provided the Browns' only points.

Ravens 13, Vikings 3

Joe Fagnano continued a strong preseason showing for Baltimore, throwing for 123 yards and a touchdown in a victory over host Minnesota.

The undrafted rookie out of UCenn completed 15 of 20 passes for the Ravens (2-0) and has 547 passing yards, two TDs and one interception through two games. His third-quarter touchdown pass to LasVintay Wester just Baltimore ahead for good, breaking a 3-3 tie. The

Ravens' defense had five sacks, while kicker Tyler Long made a pair of field goals.

With starter Kyle Murray sitting, former first-round-draft pick J.J. McCarthy got the start for the Vikings (1-1). He completed 5 of 10 passes for 81 yards, completing a 50-yard deep pass to Tai Felten (game-high 66 receiving yards) but also overthrowing a wide-open receiver on fourth-and-goal. Carson Wentz was 9-of-8 passing for 92 yards in relief of McCarthy.

Rams 34, Saints 0

Matsun Bennett IV passed for 101 yards and rushed for two touchdowns, rookie Ty Simpson passed for 75 yards and Los Angeles raised the stakes in its backup quarterback battle during the victory over visiting New Orleans.

Bennett had 1 and 8-yard rushing TDs in the second quarter and safety Alex Cook returned an interception 100 yards for a third-quarter score. Jacques Hunter ran for 68 yards, including a 12-yard TD, for the Rams (2-0).

The Los Angeles defense had two takeaways near the goal line in the third quarter. In addition to Cook's intercep-

tion, defensive tackle Payton Zelock recovered a funder at the 2-yard line.

Spencer Rattler was 14-of-23 passing for 141 yards and an interception for the Saints (0-2), while Zach Wilson was 6-of-12 passing for 55 yards and an interception. New Orleans gave up 405 yards of total offense while gaining 293 yards.

Giants 26, Dolphins 3

Jamie Winston passed for 100 yards and ran for a touchdown, Devin Singletary rushed for 40 yards with a score and stalling New York relief past Miami.

Winston and Singletary each ran for first-half touchdowns as the Giants (1-1) led 20-5 at halftime. New York outgained Miami 390-002 in total yards. Brandon Allen spent time at quarterback for the Giants and was 15 of 18 for 101 yards.

Cam Miller was 6-of-8 passing for 60 yards and had 18 yards rushing for the Dolphins (0-2), who were held to 50 yards on the ground and had just three first downs to 26 for the Giants.

The game was played two days after a fight routed joint practice between the teams.

Seahawks WR Bobo placed on season-ending IR

The Seattle Seahawks placed wide receiver Jake Bobo on season-ending injured reserve Saturday.

The transaction comes one day after Bobo sustained a knee injury during a joint practice session with the Tennessee Titans in Nashville. Bobo was carted off the practice field after being thrown a pass near the sideline.

Wide receiver Julian Hicks was signed to fill the open roster spot.

Hicks, 28, with one to the Seahawks after signing with the club last weekend - only to be wanted to make room for two-time Pro Bowl comeback Trevon Diggs. Hicks has yet to play in an NFL game despite a stint with the Green Bay Packers after going undrafted out of Albany in 2024.

Bobo, 28, played in 8 games last season and caught two passes on two targets for 20 yards. He made two catches in the 2nd and 3 games for 25 yards and one TD for the Seahawks, who beat New England 29-03 in Super Bowl LX.

For his career, Bobo has 34 receptions on 44 targets for 323 yards and three touchdowns in 45 regular-season games (three starts) since 2023.

Bills send condolences to Oliver following death of son

Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Ed Oliver is mourning the loss of his 2-year-old son.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office in Houston announced on June 28 that an unidentified toddler had been trans-

ported to a local hospital following a swimming pool incident.

Saturday afternoon, the Houston Chronicle reported the child who downed at the Oliver family home in the Huffman area was Ed Oliver III.

The Bills sent their thoughts to the family on Saturday.

On behalf of the entire Buffalo Bills organization, we want to publicly express our condolences to Ed Oliver and his family on the devastating loss of his son," Bills general manager Brandon Beane said in a statement. "It's an unthinkable tragedy for any parent. We will continue to support Ed and his family as we all grieve this tragic loss."

NFL Network reported Oliver and his family are asking for "privacy and prayers at this very difficult time."

Oliver, 28, did not travel with the team to Cleveland for Saturday's preseason game against the Browns, due to an unspecified injury. First-year head coach Joe Bailey said earlier this week that Oliver was among the injured Bills though he did not provide details.

Texans sign WBs Jones, Shepard

The Houston Texans signed a pair of

wide receivers, adding Zay Jones and Sterling Shepard on the heels of fellow welness Jayden Higgins being ruled out for the season with a torn ACL.

In a corresponding move, linebacker K.C. Ossai was added to the reserved/injured list.

Jones, 31, played in eight games for the Arizona Cardinals last season and had 12 receptions for 103 yards. Over nine NFL seasons, Jones has 307 receptions for 3,295 yards and 18 touchdowns for the Buffalo Bills (2007-99), Oakland/ Las Vegas Raiders (2009-22), Jacksonville Jaguars (2022-23) and Cardinals.

Shepard, 33, played in 15 games (two starts) for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season and had 39 receptions for 375 yards and one TD.

In 30 NFL seasons, he has 443 receptions for 4,800 yards and 25 TDs for the New York Giants (2008-23) and Buccaneers.

Ossai, 23, was on the Miami Dolphins' practice squad last season and was signed by the Texans on May 26. He has yet to play in an NFL game. Ossai's injury is undisclosed.

Higgins, 23, was injured in a red-tone drill during a joint practice Tuesday with the Raiders.

Yet Vrabel's overexposed off-field relationship with former NFL reporter Danna Bessim has created a bizarre off-season for the defending AFC champs, the coach even missing part of the NFL draft to spend time with his family.

And while the Patriots have given no indication Vrabel is on this ice, off-field distractions can only be tolerated for so long – particularly if the product on the field begins to suffer or if what's been a loyal locker room to Vrabel loses its faith in him. It's a situation that hears continued watching, especially whenever more info about Vrabel and Bussim looks – which seems nearly inevitable.

• N Joe Brady, Buffalo Bills

It's almost patently unfair to include a rookie coach – nearly as unfair as McDermott losing this job after the Bills lost a divisional-round playoff game in overtime thanks to a highly debatable Josh Allen interception. But owner Terry Pegula made it clear after firing McDermott that he painfully expects this team to be in the Super Bowl. And soon.

He also said 'there's a lot of people that want to look at taking this job – there's a lot of interest.' Ultimately, 36-year-old Brady, who's close to Allen, was promoted from his offensive coordinator role.

But – now matter how good the vibes are currently – if a team that reached positions each of the last seven years under McDermott doesn't at least remain on the range of reaching Super Sunday for the first time since the 1993 season, who knows what Pegula might do next?

• K. Klint Kubsak, Las Vegas Raiders

This is an indictment of an unstable organization and an impatient league, not Kubsak, who's fresh off running a Super Bowl ring as the Seattle Seahawks' offensive coordinator.

From a Silver and Black perspective, when including interims, the Raiders have had five head coaches over the past five seasons.

More broadly, while the selection of Fernando Mendoza is understandably creating optimism in Sin City, the last four teams to draft a quarterback with the No. 1 overall pick have made a coaching change midway through the ensuing season – Urban Meyer (Jaguars) and Frank Beeth (Panthers) failing to last a full campaign despite being hired to work with the next face of those respective franchises.

And while nothing suggests Kubsak's nascent tenure will be disastrous, NFL does stand for 'Not For Long,' and recent history is a troublesome harbinger.

• T. Matt LaFleur, Green Bay Packers

He's won nearly two-thirds of his games through seven seasons and only minced the playoffs only once – which largely explains and justifies his recently signed contract extension (he whatever they've worth – just ask Kiff Kingsbury).

Yet the Pack barely qualified for the past three postseason, the No. 7 seed in each, and only have one playoff win since leading name Rodgers these years ago. LaFleur's offensive playcalling has come under scrutiny. And a coach who pushed back on the need for a No. 1 receiver – after experiencing so much success with Duvante Adams early in his tenure – learned his fleet of No. 2 caliber receivers was unhappy last year and unsure of their roles.

Some departures from that group should make the division of responsibility more apparent. But what won't help will be OLR Micah Parsons' early season absence (ACL) nor the specter that RV Josh Jacobs could face a suspension at some point for his off-field conduct. Not an ideal set of circumstances for a coach and team operating in the tightly grouped NFC North quarter.

• K. Nick Strianni, Philadelphia Eagles

Yet another seemingly absurd inclusion. Strianni has taken Philly to the playoffs in each of his five seasons, the Eagles coaching two Super Bowls during that stretch and capturing the Lombardi Trophy just a year ago.

And even though Strianni's sometimes brash personally can rub some the wrong way, his players basically allow him. And yet it's been a convulsive offensive in the City of Brotherly Love – the arrival of rookie DC Sean Marquez, departure of original O-Inagura Jeff Stiveland and trade of WRR A.J. Brown, a time-time team captain, the most notable changes. And they all seemingly let back to QB John Hurts in one way or another.

winning percentage, Strianni should be indictment. But this is Philadelphia, and big changes wouldn't be a shock if a veteran-laden team implodes amid its new variables.

• S. Dan Quinn, Washington Commanders

Owner Josh Harris, who bought this team three years ago, has generally embraced stability with his pro clubs in other sports, so this isn't to suggest that the as is about to fall here.

But Quinn, who guided the Falcons to a Super Bowl during his second season in Atlanta, could become a victim of his own success after Washington stunningly made the NFC championship game in 2024, his first year in the nation's capital.

Much is likely to depend on the progression of QB Jayden Daniels, who had perhaps the best rookie season in NFL history in 2024 but sustained multiple injuries last year, refueling some pre-staff concerns about his durability.

Now he'll be working with an unproven offensive coordinator (David Blough) and now left tackle while hoping a revamped defense can relieve some pressure to score piles of points. If Daniels doesn't turn it around, it's conceivable Quinn and his staff won't get another chance to do so, either.

• 4. Zac Taylor, Cincinnati Bengals

The only holdover HC in the AFC North, he should have a golden opportunity to excel in 2026 ... yet might also find it's one fraught with pool. Taylor and QB Joe Burrow led Cוקר to a Super Bowl in 2023 but have only returned to the playoffs one time since – injuries (primarily to Burrow), inconsistency

and an unbalanced team undermining the operation as a whole.

The organization has taken uncharacteristic steps in order to maximize Burrow's championship window – in-season trades, hefty spending in free agency, even contract instructions.

But if success doesn't come to fruition in 2026 – and amid speculation about Burrow's level of faith in the franchise – Taylor, now entering his eighth season, could wind up as the next major adjustment.

• L. Todd Bowles, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

From the optimist's perspective, he's coaching in a unique division for a franchise that values continuity and stability and has captured three NFC South reverse in four seasons.

From the pessimist's perspective, Bowles' overall record with the lines is 36-36 (including one postseason win), his defenses have been average at best, and the team collapsed to an 8-9 record despite a 6-2 start in 2025, costing Tampa Bay a played North.

Bowles, who hired Zac Robinson as his fifth offensive coordinator, gets another crack in 2026 – and with a team that bid a shot to veteran leaders like Mike Evans and Laverin David – but the margin for error seems significantly reduced. Having unhappy team captains (Baker Mayfield, Vitu Veni doesn't help).

• 2. Aaron Upton, New York Jets

His maiden voyage produced a 3-14 record, albeit wide, a talent-defense team that offended former corner-stones Saucy Gardner and Quizzon Will, flares at the trade deadline.

Despite its challenges and chronic

quarterback quandary, Glenn's team was generally competitive in the first three months of the 2022 season. But the Jets went to pieces down the stretch, becoming the first team in NFL history to lose five consecutive games by at least 23 points against – a collapse that also sparked speculation that players quit on Glenn.

Now, he's in the unique position of running a group with three first-round picks in next year's draft, where the Jets are expected to take their next swing at obtaining a franchise quarterback. As for the present?

The Jets selected three times in Round of this year's draft, meaning the talent quotient has gone up. Yet trying to make the young parts, they both extend free agent pickups and new QB Glenn Smith, could be a tall order – even if failure probably gets the NYJ right where many fans want them, namely it or near the top of the 2027 draft.

What could it all mean for Glenn, a coach who specializes in defense and might not be the ideal candidate to shepherd an incoming rookie QB a year from now? Seems like a tough needle to thread.

• 1. Shane Streichen, Indianapolis Cubs

After a highly encouraging 6-2 start in 2025, his team lost its final seven games – luring Philip Rivers, 44, out of retirement to start three of those defeats after the seasoning-ending loss of QB Daniel Jones (Achilles) – and falling short of the playoffs.

Again, And while co-owner Carlie Irvay-Gordon, in her first go-round as the team's CEO following her father's death, quickly settled on keeping Streichen and GM Chris Ballard in 2026, she was also unspiring to her director.

'We have been very clear with Chris and Shane that giving them another opportunity means the sense of urgency for them to deliver and perform has never been higher,' she said, among other pointed remarks, after the 2025 campaign stopped.

But are they set up for success? Ballard's bold acquisition of Gardner cost Indy its 2026 first-round draft pick and next year's.

While Jones has looked fit physically in training camp, he's coming off a maize injury and hasn't exactly been the most consistent player throughout his career.

Worse, re-signing him and Alec Pierce (for four years and IBM million), who's never had 50 catches in a season during his four-year career two from WRR, essentially forced the trade of WR Michael Pittman Jr. to Pittsburgh while other key veterans also had to depart Pierce also underwent ankle surgery that leaves his Week 1 availability in doubt.

The AFC South doesn't have a rep as the league's most imposing division, but the Colts, despite that hot start, finished well behind Jacksonville and Houston in 2022.

And with the Titans expected to be improved this year, it sure seems like Streichen and Ballard will struggle to meet Imay-Gordon's explicit demand.

Jays win as Cease takes no-hitter into 7th

Dylan Cease took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, and the visiting Toronto Blue Jays recorded a 4 victory over the New York Yankees on Saturday afternoon.

Cease (8-5) carried a no-hit bid for 6-5 innings until Jack Chisholm Jr. singled to right field. He then allowed an RBI single to Austin Wells for New York's first run before exiting to a nice hand from Toronto Sun and some of the Yankees' fans.

Cease was attempting to throw his second career no-hitter after achieving the first July 25, 2024, in Washington for San Diego.

Cease had a no-hit bid in the seventh or beyond for the second time this season. He took a no-hitter into the ninth in San Francisco before allowing a single to current Yankees outfielder Hefari Ramos on his fifth pitch.

It was the second time Cease had a no-hitter into the seventh at Yankee Stadium. He lost a no-hit bid by allowing a home to Cody Bellinger on May 7, 2025, while pitching for San Diego.

Reda 11, Diamondbacks 5

JJ Hickey hit for the cycle and drove in three runs, fifty De La Cruz had four hits and was a triple short of the cycle, and Cincinnati wound the weekend series with a victory over Arizona in Phoenix.

Hickey doubled in a run in the first, back in fifty plays in the third and singled in a run in a three-run fourth before hitting his same-high 200 homer in the sixth, a 274-foot base over the right field from 6 to 6-3 lead.

It was the eighth cycle in Reda history, the first since De La Cruz did it in June 2023 in his fifth major league game.

The team in major league history has had two players hit for the cycle in the same game.

De La Cruz struck out in his final off-hat in the eighth.

De La Cruz hit his 21st homer and had two singles and a double as the Reda pounded out a season-high 16 hits, including four homers, after being finished in front singles as a 9-3 loss Friday, their 15th shutout of the season.

Angels 3, Rangers 0

Ryan Johnson allowed one hit over seven shutout innings to lead Los Angeles to a victory over the Rangers in Arlington, Texas.

Johnson 0-7) held the Rangers hit-test for five innings, allowing two walks and striking out three with one hit batter in his outing.

Michael Friston walked one in the eighth and inside Ryan Watson earned his second save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth as the trio combined on a one-bitter.

Traummin Zach Nits was 3-for-5 with two doubles, a triple and two runs scored.

Mike Trout went 2-for-4 with a double in the 4th, Monica Ballesteros had a run-scoring double among his two hits and Vaughn Simmons drove in a run on Los Angeles evened the three-game series.

Cody Freeman recorded the Rangers' loss hit to open the ninth inning.

Nets led off the game with a double in left-center and scored on Trout's bloop single, giving the Angels a 1-0 lead.

Mariners 5, Cubs 4

Randy Anziarema hit two home runs – including a two-run shot with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning – and robbed another as Seattle called for a victory against visiting Chicago.

With two outs in the ninth, Weston Wilson doubled in right-center field off Cubs closer Jacob Webb (6-3).

Joe Bross khopped a single to right-country home, and Anziarema followed with a walk-off blast to straightaway center.

Anziarema hit the first pitch in the bottom of the first inning out to left-center and looped at the wall to bring back what would've been a solo shot from the Cubs' Miguel Amaya in the third.

Anziarema's heroics lifted the Mariners to their fifth victory in seven games and two in the second, Newport's Kade Anderson from helping Alex in his major league debut. The Cubs lost their third straight.

Mariners reliever Michael Rucker (1-6) got the victory with a scoreless ninth.

Dodgers 4, Pirates 3

Kyle Tucker hit a go-ahead two-run single in the fifth inning, Taek Skobal had 8 strikeouts over seven innings and Los Angeles called for a victory over visiting Pittsburgh.

Treosar Hernandez and Alek Thomas each had 6th singles for the Dodgers, who estimated their winning streak to five games for their longest run since a six-game streak to May.

Skobal (6-7) gave up all three of his runs allowed in the first inning before recovering to earn his first win in four starts since closing the Dodgers from the Detroit Tigers just before the trade deadline. The left-transfer's 3 strikeouts were one off his season high.

Oord Cruz had a two-run triple and Los Angeles once earlier. Jared Jones gave up two runs on these hits over four innings as the Pirates fell to 0-2 at the start of a nine-game road trip.

Athletics 4, Astros 3

Lawrence Butler laced a run-scoring single that highlighted a three-run eighth inning and helped carry the visiting Athletics to a victory over Houston.

The Athletics mapped a five-game losing skid by answering the Astros' two-run tally in the bottom of the seventh inning. Jeff McNeil gained the comeback with a loaded single against Astros reliever Bernard Souza (2-2), who then walked Jack failed to put the tying run on base.

Sousa later unlocked a wild pitch that scored McNeil, and Butler followed with a sharp single that Astros first baseman Christian Walker deflected but failed to gloss: chief scored the game-tying one and two batters later, Butler scored on Anah Hotiri's groundball.

Athletics relievers Hcopy Harris and Elvis Alvarado preserved the lead. Alvarado retired the side in order in the ninth and earned his third save.

Guardians 4, Rockies 3

Jo Adell homered and singled, backing six solid innings from Tanner Bikes, and Cleveland lead Colorado in Denver.

Jose Ramirez singled to move into fifth place on the Roseboro's hits list with 1,752, according to the team.

Cleveland's victory, coupled with a loss by Texas on Saturday night, tied the Rangers for the third and final American League wild-card berth. The Guardians have won three in a row, their best run since a four-game win streak to end the first half of the season.

Bikes (5-0) got his first win since July 20 with his 10th quality start of the year. The right-transfer allowed two runs on five hits and struck out six, ending his eight by banning Connor Neely and Wild Cactus. Cubs fourth gave up a lead-off homer to Neely as the ninth before locking down his 33rd save.

Mickey Anzuda homered. Jake McCuskey and Troy Johnston had two hits each for Colorado.

Red Sox 3, Giants 2

Eli White did home with the winning run on Wilpin Alonzo's faddie's choice, as Boston erased a 2-0, ninth-inning debut and walked off with a win over visiting San Francisco.

With the bases loaded, Giants first baseman Bryce Eldridge made a good dining stop on Alonzo's low base, but his throw pulled catcher Andrew Kninner's foot off home plate as he tried to complete the fore play.

White broke San Francisco's shutout bid with a one-out single up the middle

off Sam Hentges (1-6), scoring Caleb Durbin, who went 2-for-3 before drawing a leadrill walk that sparked the game-turning rally. Nick Sogard followed immediately with a game-tying double to left.

In the top of the ninth, San Francisco had the bases loaded after a single and two walks, but Sogard's dining catch at second base robbed Eldridge of a hit that would have paddled a two-run lead.

Samuel Basalle drilled a two-run homer with one out in the eighth inning to pull the Orioles even at 2.2 and Baltimore's relievers were stout, allowing the Orioles to capture the first two games of the series.

Fete Johnson and Cody Mays both had two hits for the Orioles, who have won two nights in a row following a four-game losing streak.

Liam Hicks homered for the American League best Rays, who are 2-7 scored first last nine games. Yandy Diaz and Jonny DeLuca both had two hits for Tampa Bay.

Rice Davis (5-0) was the winning pitcher with one inning of relief. Baltimore starter Brandon Young allowed two runs on six hits in 5-1 innings.

Padres 7, Twins 5

Ty France's RBI single capped a four-run tally in the bottom of the seventh inning that helped San Diego rally for a win over visiting Minnesota.

The tally started with the Padres down 0-2 when Freddy Fermin reached by catcher's interference on Ryan Arfere. Fernando Tatis Jr. singled Fermin to second and both scored when Jake Crommeloch skied a double to the left field corner.

Manny Machado's grounder to shortstop Santos Odegorpe turned into the tying run when their baseman Brooks Lee failed to catch an accurate throw as Crommeloch tried to advance. That enabled Crommeloch to score the tying run as Machado reached second on the fielder's choice.

France then touched Andrew Morris (4-5) for a looping time into right that placed Machado with the go-ahead run. Tatis tacked on an insurance run in the eighth with an RBI single that scored Luis Campasana.

Marlins 4, Nationals 2

Heatheris Hernandez slugged his team leading 9th homer, and Evye Perez continued his stellar pitching as host Miami defeated Washington.

Marlins closer free Nationals, who blew a save opportunity on Friday, was not used in this game.

Michael Calvert Haufner pitched scoreless ninth to earn his second save of the season.

Jakob Marow also homered for the Marlins, who will try for a three-game sweep on Sunday.

Froze (7-9) allowed three hits, these walks and two runs (one earned) in five innings.

Froze has a 3.7 ERA this season, but since returning from injury on June 24, he has a 1.6R ERA.

Washington is 2-0 over its past 11 games.

Jake Yaris (2-0) took the loss, allowing six hits, two walks and four runs in six innings. He has lost four straight decisions.

Royals 3, Tigers 1

Michael Wacks allowed one run over seven strong innings, Kyle Reid and Salvador Perez each hit a solo homer and host Kansas City extended its season-high winning streak to seven games with a victory over struggling Detroit.

Wacks (7-8) yielded only a home run to Hue-To-Law and two other hits, issuing a walk and striking out six in another stellar effort versus Detroit. It was the fifth quality start of the season for the veteran right-hander, fourth most in the majors. He has recorded three of them, while yielding three sons over 21 innings, in an many starts against the Tigers this season.

Alex Lange pitched a perfect eighth inning and Cody Kimball overcame a two-out walk and a balk in the ninth to record his first save since 2024 for the Royals, who are 6-0 on a seven-game homestead. Ideal, meanwhile, homered for a second straight game for Kansas City.

Dover Anderson (4-5) was charged with three runs, while also allowing all five of Kansas City's hits.

Brewers 4, Braves 1

Jake Bauers blasted a two-run homer to cap a three-run third inning for Milwaukee in a win over visiting Atlanta.

Brewers starter Logan Henderson (8-2) allowed one run and five hits over six innings in the second game of the three-game series. The second-year right-transfer struck out four and walked two on a career-high 100 pitches.

William Contreras contributed two hits, drove in a run and scored for the Brewers, who have won six of seven to maintain the best record in MLB (88-49).

Braves left-hander Martin Perez (8-4) was victimized by his own thrilling error in the third, which led to three uncased runs. He gave up one named run and four hits over four innings, striking out two and walking three.

Michael Harris (5 had two hits and an RBI for Atlanta, which has lost five of six.

Harris came up with runners on the corners and one out in the first and went the other way with a double down the third-base line, scoring Drake Baldwin for a 1-0 lead.

Mets 10, White Sox 5

Luis Robert Jr. haunted his former team by hitting two homers as visiting New York outlasted Chicago in the middle game of a three-game interleague series.

Robert, who played his first six seasons with the White Sox before being traded to the Mets on Jan. 10, hit a two-run homer off Luis Castillo in 4th in the third, two pitches after successfully challenging a called third strike.

Robert added a solo shot in the seventh off Huancas Brazilian, who opened the season with the Mets before being dealt to the White Sox Aug. 3, to complete his first two-homer game since Aug. 16, 2024.

Ed Bichelle, Cainco Bongo and Luis Torente also homered for the last-place hits, who improved to 2-5 since the trade deadline. The five round-trippers tied a season-high for New York, which went deep for times against the Detroit Tigers in a 9-4 win on May 14.

Bongo opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first and finished 3-for-5.

Phillies 12, Cardinals 1

Andrew Painter pitched a career-high seven innings and Bryce Harper hit a three-run homer to fuel Philadelphia to its eighth straight win – a victory over visiting St. Louis.

Painter (3-0), who has struggled for most of his rookie season, allowed one run and five hits without a walk, striking out eight. While Harper provided the big game, Philadelphia was received two RBI apiece from Kyle Schroeder, Edmunds from and Bryce for La Cruz.

J.J. Wetherfield's 17th home run was one of the five highlights for the Cardinals.

Quinn Mathews (0-2) was charged with seven runs and 10 hits in five innings for St. Louis, which needs to win Sunday to avoid a sweep and falling back to 2000 on the season.

Philadelphia didn't woke much time against Mathews in the bottom of the first. Schroeder drove a leadrill walk and Troy Tarnes singled before the St. Louis left-transfer recorded the first two sets. However, Alex Bohn came through with an RBI single to left.

Reddick earns 7th pole position of season

LONDON, NH – Tyler Reddick conceded he was a bit surprised – although pleasantly so – at his Bosch Light Pole Qualifying effort Saturday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway after the five-time race winner and 2026 championship contender claimed the top starting position for Sunday's Dollar Tree 500 12 p.m. ET on USA Network, PHS, IntraCAR NASCAR Redick NASCAR Cup Series race.

Reddick turned a lap of 118.094 mph second for historic New England mile track in his No. 45 2352 Racing Toyota, leading Wood Brothers Racing's Josh Berry by .015 seconds in the No. 23 Ford. It's Reddick's fourth pole position of the season and 15th of his career.

Including weather-forced qualifying cancellation, it's the seventh time Reddick has started from the top position on the grid the year – the first time since Charlotte in May that he will start from the number one position.

Four times the 30-year-old Californian has won from that place on the starting grid – leading the field to both the green flag and the checkered at back-to-back races at Echo Park Speedway near Atlanta and the Circuit of The Americas road course this spring and then again three weeks later at the historic Darlington Raceway and most recently at Kansas Speedway in May, when he claimed his fifth – and most recent – victory.

tice session, Reddick's Toyota was only 24th-best in 20-byp average speed. This will be the first front-row start for him since June at Nashville when he qualified second.

"I was thinking if qualifying went good, we'd be top 10," Reddick conceded. "Obviously, you want to get the most out of the car, the most out of the lap. I just tried to understand what I didn't like about my car in practice and make sure not to tap into that at all on the lap. Just try to make the most of our strengths in practice and tie it all together and run a really good lap in qual-

ifying.

'Just feel like my mindset was in a really good place for what I needed to do,' added Reddick, who has now start out up 10 in 27 of the 25 races.

It was a strong showing for Berry as well, who has now rolled off in the top 10 in all three of his career New Hampshire marks, Hardrick Motorsports' William Byron was third-quicksed in the No. 24 Chevrolet, with championship points leader Joe Gibbs Racing's Denny Hamlin fourth on the grid.

fort and will start fifth in the No. 97 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet, calling his car 'great' after the session and emphasizing how important he expects track position to be.

Especially so, considering he is ranked 16th and holds a 50-point advantage on that final Chase qualifying position. It's the fifth time this season the New Zealander road racing champion has started from the top 10 on an oval course.

Two-time New Hampshire winner Christopher Bell was sixth-flavored in the qualifying session, just ahead of his Joe Gibbs that ran towards the 7th Gibbs yce-enth. Defending race winner Ryan Blaney will roll off eighth in the No. 22 Ford with Hendrick Motorsports teammates Bob Larson and Alex Bowman rounding out the top 10.

"Teh me if we hit it, we should be pretty good on speed but that's going to be the tough part, right, making sure we make the right changes between today and tomorrow," said Reddick, who flashed a big smile after his effort. "Going to some of these tracks, on more typical days when I've been sitting on pole, we've been fast in practice. This one is really fun and cool because practice was not like for us.

"It wasn't like we walked away from practice thinking we need to make a little adjustment here or there, so for us to take that and go lap the lap down like we did, that for me is a big deal.

"For me, I've been able to get the pole at a few of places over the years that's been really fun and special but the fashion we did it today was really, really awesome."

Riggs rules on way to OT win at New Hampshire

LONDON, NH – Layne Riggs capped his 2026 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series regular season with his series-host strike win of the year, claiming the Team EJP 175 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway Saturday afternoon in a dramatic double overtime victory in the regular season finish.

The 24-year-old North Carolinian claimed a .293-second win over his Front Row Motorsports teammate, Chandler Smith – Riggs' pole-sitting No. 34 Front Row Ford leading a race high 506 of the 109 laps, including the last 75 through a pair of overtime restarts. It's his 18th career Truck Series win.

Statement win, this is awesome," a grinning Riggs told a limited New Hampshire Motor Speedway grandstand, receiving choirs as he spoke about how many his lives racing in New England.

"Thank you to everybody at Front Row Motorsports and Ford racing. I thought I was off a little bit and thought I was in trouble," Riggs said, of finishing second and third a NASCAR Cup Series regular former Ziltech who swept Kings' and Kings 2 of the race.

But Riggs credited his team with making the key adjustments to his track to close out the race and the young talent took it from there in what's been his most successful season of NASCAR competition.

"One, two, Front Row Motorsports,

it's in the name," he added of his and Smith's effort Saturday. "Let's bring on the Chase. Only get seven (races) left. No mercy."

Another big winner on the day was McArdle-Hilgemann Racing's Tyler Ankram, claiming the fifth and final position for the seven-race Chase that will decide the ultimate 2026 season champion. Ankram persevered after his No. 26 Chevrolet suffered mechanically up to six mid-race, dropped nearly a lap down but rebounded for a fifth-place finish in the 36-track field.

Although disappointed with the struggles, the finish was good enough to give Ankram a seven-point edge over veteran Stewart Friesen and an 8-point edge over Jake Garcia who were vying with him for the final Chase position. Both of those drivers led multiple laps, but ultimately, Ankram's points advantage coming into the race was enough cushion to keep him in that final championship transfer position. Friesen's No. 32 Halmar Friesen Racing Toyota finished fourth while Garcia's No. 98 ThorSport Racing Ford was 18th.

Ankram was excited about making the Chase, but still visibly frustrated with an emotional day full of challenges to get to that point.

"It's extremely rare you come to a place as fast as this and have no rear brakes and cars't fit the problem," Ankram said. "We've had a few times like this through the year, and I thought we were done with them. Luckily, Eddie D'Hondt, my spotter, gave me some advice (in the closing laps).

Norris beats Russell to pole for Dutch Grand Prix

ZANDVOORT, Netherland – Formula One champion Lando Norris beat Mercedes title contenders George Russell and Kimi Antonelli to earn McLaren a third successive Dutch Grand Prix pole position on Saturday.

The pole, with drivers scrambling to get their laps in before forecast rain at the seaside Zandvoort circuit, was also the second in a row for Norris after he won in Hungary from the top slot before the August break.

Norris now has a great chance to win on Sunday, given that the driver on pole has always won the Dutch round ever since it returned to the calendar in 2023 following a 34-year absence.

Sunday's race will be the last in that sequence, with Zandvoort's old-school layout dropping off the calendar for the foreseeable future.

The British said Mercedes-powered McLaren had made setup changes after he finished third in the sprint won by Russell.

"We had to try something because what we had before wasn't going to be enough," he said.

"So we made some small changes, nothing that wasn't going to make so gain two tenths or one tenth even, but enough to maybe give me a bit more confidence."

He had not the provisional boat time of one minute Il 344 seconds and put pole out of much with a 13.8.83.

Russell ended up 0.352 slower and Antonelli, the championship leader who had briefly gone top with his second effort, was 0.321 off the pace.

"I thought we had it in there to fight for pole, but I'm pretty satisfied with F2, especially going back after such a tough last few races before the break, sort of get in my process again and try to fight with them tomorrow," Russell said.

Antonelli felt a mistake on his final run, but also cost him a couple of tenths, a critical amount in such a close battle.

McLaren's Oscar Piastri, last year's race winner from pole after Norris triumphed in 2024, was fourth fastest and 0.342 slower than his teammate.

The Australian was passed by Russell coming out of the pitlane for his final lap, such was the Mercedes driver's urgency to get out.

Hamilton got his boat lap in later than the rest, rewarded by the thirteenth rain turning out to be little more than dark skies and a few drops.

"I feel optimistic. Fifth is not the greatest but it could be far worse, so I'm grateful to be there but of course I wish I was up further ahead," he said.

"With the right strategy and right execution I think hopefully we can challenge the cars ahead."

Toronto stuns Miami with scoring flurry

Josh Sargent and Dorrick Etienne Jr. each scored within a three-minute span in the second half to give Toronto FC's 2-1 lead victory over Inter Miami.

The spare result was just Toronto FC's second win in 10 (2-5-3) away matches this season, and their first-ever win in seven (3-5-1) trips to Miami.

Toronto (5-7-9, 24 points) is 2-0-2 in its last four matches.

Lionel Messi had the only goal for the Havana (8-4-6, 29 points), who remain in second place in the Eastern Conference.

Both teams delivered a lot of cheppy play during the scoreless first-half. Luis Suarez had the best chance in the 28th minute, as the forward half plenty of space on the edge of the box but fired a shot wide.

The most notable event of the first half was an apparent injury to Miami's Gonzalo Lujan, who left in the 24th minute. Sergio Reguilon also left the match with a potential injury to the 58th minute, as Noah Allen was substituted into the back line.

Minnesota 5, San Jose 1

Kelvin Yebeah scored a brace in Minnesota United's lopinated away win over the Earthquake.

The real number nine-match (6-4-1) winless drought for Minnesota in regular season play, and continued the Loorie longstanding dominance over the Earthquake. Minnesota United are 9-1-4 in their last 14 regular-season matches with San Jose, dating back to the 2009 season.

Brian White's first-half brace pre-pelled the Whitecaps to a victory over visiting FC Dallas.

Dominated Idaho and Eilee Ocamps also scored first-half goals for the Whitecaps (12-4-4, 40 points), while Bruno Calverio added a second-half goal for the hosts.

Vancouver now has points in four straight matches and moved back atop the Western Conference standings, two points clear of Houston, which lost to St. Louis City on Saturday.

Whitecaps keeper Yobor Yakaoka made one sure for his eighth clean sheet of the season.

The Whitecaps dominated first-half possession, last six shots on target and led 4-0 after the opening 45 minutes at BC Place.

Vancouver opened the scoring in the fifth minute off a State Gault corner, which came to Idaho's feet before he put his right-footed strike from the top of the box into the bottom left corner past a diving Jonathan Siron for his third goal of the season.

Nashville 3, Columbus 2

Brad Baker-Wilding and Andy Najer scored in second-half stoppage time to help Nashville 6C tally and stun the visiting Crew.

Brian-Wilding made it 2-2 in the third minute of stoppage time when the veteran headed a corner kick by Hany Mukhtar into the net for his first MLB goal in his 74th match across the last six matches.

Najer got the winner two minutes later from the right side of the box after an entry half by Joisson Palacios.

Nashville (10-2-6, 49 points) is 10-0-3 at home and moved 10 points ahead of second place Inter Miami in the Eastern Conference.

After Mukhtar put Nashville ahead in the 27th minute, shattered Paris tied 8-1-4 with the Crews. First shot on goal in the third round and Andre Gaines gave the visitors a 2-1 lead 10 minutes later on Columbus' second shot on goal.

The Crew (5-8-5, 20 points) have lost three straight and are 1-4-1 in the six matches since the World Cup break concluded.

Onni Valakast and Elias Achouri scored first-half goals and Gabriel Pirani added a second-half tally as San Diego FC crossed to a victory over the visiting Rapids.

Goalkeeper CJ dos Santos made two saves and turned in his fourth clean sheet of the season for San Diego (7-9-6, 27 points).

Colorado (9-0-4, 28 points) goalkeeper Noro Hansen had one save.

An approximate strike by Valakast gave San Diego a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute.

As the Rapids attempted to play out of the back, defender Reggie Cannon sent a pass across the box to Colorado teammate Bob Holding, who tried to flut the half back to Hansen. Holding couldn't connect, allowing Valakast to spend in and drive a shot past Hansen.

San Diego doubled its lead in the 35th minute. Achouri headed a lefted pass into the box that Holding failed to control, then Achouri collected the loose half and scored from the center of the box.

St. Louis 2, Houston 1

Dante Polভার scored in the 85th minute to give St. Louis City a victory over the visiting Dynamo, extending its franchise high MLS unbeaten streak to 11 games.

Polভার scored for the first time this year with a left-footed blast from the middle of the box inside the left post. The shot came after a birdieed clearance attempt by a Houston defender.

Simon Becker also scored as St. Louis City (9-6-6, 33 points) ended the five-game winning streak of the Dynamo.

St. Louis City improved to 8-0-3 during their unbeaten run and with Becker's tally in the 23rd minute ending the Dynamo's streak of 405 minutes without surrendering a goal.

Brendan Allyn scored in the 73th minute for the Dynamo (10-7-2, 38 points), who also lost at St. Louis in the U.S. Open Cup quarterback in May.

Jonathan Bond had two saves for the Dynamo, while Roman Bashi had three saves for St. Louis City.

Bond came up short in his attempt to record his sixth straight clean sheet.

Orlando 2, Salt Lake 1

Adriane Greenman recorded his first Major League Soccer brace to help host Orlando City tally for a victory over Real Salt Lake.

Orlando City (7-10-3, 24 points) picked up a needed three points and snapped a three-game winless streak in league play.

Orlando City moved into ninth place the final performance spot - in the Eastern Conference with the victory while Salt Lake remained in eighth in the Western Conference.

Greenman, the 35-year old French forward, scored twice in the second half to lift the Lasso after a slow start.

The game-winner came in the 89st minute when Greenman controlled the half inside the box. His first attempt to fire a shot was defended, had he still controlled it and fired the half past Salt Lake goalkeeper Mason Stajduhar to break a 1-1 tie.

Orlando City's defense stared off a couple of late chances by Salt Lake to hang on to its fifth league victory at home.

Charlotte 2, D.C. United 1

Will Cleary's first career MLB goal hooper Charlotte's second-half comeback in a defeat of visiting D.C. United.

A sluggish first half that produced only two shots on target quickly turned into one-to-one soccer after halftime. Although D.C. (5-7-9, 24 points) outstret Charlotte (9-7-5, 32 points) 20-5 in the first half and initially enjoyed the better chances, Charlotte scored three consecutive goals to complete a come-from-behind victory to run its unbeaten streak to three matches.

Charlotte's Kiernan holdins made four saves, while D.C. keeper Sean Johnson saved two shots.

D.C. United finally opened the scoring in the 54th minute when Louis Munteaux outred a shot past Kallina. Matt Poltok caught the Charlotte defense by surprise with a quickly taken free kick and found Joan Peglow open at the edge of the box. Peglow lost the half off to Munteaux with one touch, and he cleanly defended his shot into the bottom right corner. Munteaux ended a five-game goal drought.

Montreal 2, LA Galaxy 2

Prince Owusu extended his goal-scoring streak to four matches with a 79th-minute equalizer for host CF Montreal, which hatched for man Los Angeles Galaxy to a draw.

Owusu's goal came after Galaxy goalkeeper ZF Marcinkowski was sent off in the 88th minute after his sliding tackle denied the Montreal striker an obvious goal-scoring opportunity. CF Montreal (5-10-6, 25 points) extended their unbeaten streak to four matches (0-0-3).

LA (6-8-6, 20 points) avoided defeat for the fourth time in five outings (1-1-3) but finished a man down for the third consecutive match.

With just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation time, and with Montreal playing with a man advantage, Owusu matched the career high total with San 13th goal of the season.

After a sixth finish from Fabian Herbers on the left bank found Louis Petrucci's Petrucci's cross inside the box and the head of Owusu and sailed past backup Galaxy goalkeeper Novak Murovic to level the match at 2-2.

Seattle 1, Cincinnati 1

Kelvin Keosa-Bonai leveled the match in the 60st minute and the visiting Sounders snapped an eight-match MLB losing streak with a draw against FC Cincinnati.

Keosa-Bonai's third goal of the season, produced after an excellent combination with Albert Ronzak, was only 5e-attn's fifth in its last nine league games.

That drought has led to a catalyst that dropped the perennial Western Conference contenders to 10th place, entering the weekend and three points beneath the playoff line.

Ronzak scored his team holding 28th goal midway through the first half for Cincinnati (8-6-7, 31 points), which dropped points at home for only the fourth time in 11 matches this season.

Of these home birmaiters, this second for the most frustrating ground in a vicious injury were the Sounders (7-9-6, 25 points) have endured Attardson Jordan Morris and Sean Perriner, midfielder Cristian Roldan and defender Yeimar were among the players unavailable for Saturday's tilt.

Chicago 1, NY Red Bulls 1

Maren Hade-Selassie scored in the 38th minute, but the surging Fire recorded a late goal and settled for a draw with the stumping New York Red Bulls in Harrison, N.J.

Chicago (8-6-3, 36 points) was denied its fourth straight MLB win and seventh straight victory across all competitors when 8 blew the late lead.

Hade-Selassie scored for the first time in his past eight MLB matches when he struck for the first time since May 31 after his teammates easily moved the back up the field.

Phillip Zinckensagel blocked New York's Julian Hall's right-footed shot from slightly outside the box in the 36th and the defensive play started the transition into offence.

Jonathan Bamba crossed midfield and passed to Viktor Radeyevic at the outer edge of the box.

While New York's Dylan Neuls struggled to defend the play, Radeyevic spotted Hade-Selassie as the left side. Hade-Selassie returned to 10th a tight-footed shot over goalie Ethan Horvath.

Austin 1, Philadelphia 1

Early goals from the Union's Cavan Sullivan and host Austin FC's Brendan Hines-Ba before the conditions took over accounted for all the scoring in the teams settled for a draw in just their second-ever meeting.

The start of the match was delayed an hour because of extreme heat in Austin but it was still 98 degrees at kickoff. Those conditions eventually took their 5x0 on the teams, who struggled to complete plays and were far from sharp, especially in the offensive ends.

Austin and Philadelphia finished the game with identical records (5-10-6, 21 points). The whole earned points for the second straight match, adding the draw to a midweek win at Seattle, while the Union extended its unbeaten stretch to six matches (4-0-2).

Fittingly, both teams started off on fire. Austin had two early scoring chances, both in the 88th minute. Myrts Grant had a few percentage attempt that Union goalkeeper Andre Blake stopped and Jon Gallagher immediately clanged a shot off the right post.

LAFC 1, Portland 1

David Brouanga scored on a shot from outside of the penalty area in the 79th minute and Los Angeles FC salvaged a draw against the visiting Timbers.

Brouanga's goal was his team-loading 18th of the season and was a breakthrough after LAFC (20-7-5, 35 points) absorbed 1-0 defeats in each of its past two matches.

Hugo Lloris made one save for LAFC, who maintained their third-place spot as the Western Conference.

David Da Costa scored a fourth-minute goal for the Timbers (9-9-4, 28 points), who moved above the playoff line and into ninth place in the Western Conference with a 3-1 victory over San Diego FC on Wednesday.

James Panteenin had 10 saves as Portland secured a coadpoint and continued a productive month with a 4-2-1 record in August across all competitions.

Despite his late score, LAFC's defensive teams continued. They have not scored more than one goal in any of their seven matches across all competitions this month.

Yamashita expands her lead in Edmonton

Japan's More Yamashita moved closer to her fourth career win on Saturday in Edmonton, casting a 5-under 65 at the CPSC Women's Open.

Her day included six birdies and a solitary bogey at Royal Mayfair Golf Club.

That performance expanded her five-shot lead to six, as she improved to 10 under for the tournament.

"I like this course, yeah," Yamashita said.

Yamashita, 21, has already recorded three victories in a span of less than 15 months, following up her 2025 AIG Women's Open victory as a rookie with two more victories in 2020, including the Meijer LPGA Classic this past June.

Americans Gina Kim and Jennifer Kupcho made matching impressive pushes on Saturday, as each curled a 64.

That score was good enough to land Kim in a tie for second with Japan's Yuri Yoshida (66) at 21 under, Kim's day included seven birdies (including five over a seven-hole stretch) and a bogey.

"I thought I played really solid all day. Hopefully, tomorrow it can be the same way," Kim said.

Kupcho is alone in fourth place at 12 under after her bogey-free round.

"I kind of have a lot of power coming out of the rough, so if I hit it in the rough, it's not like the end of the world," Kupcho said.

Yoshida put together a hot streak with birdies on three straight holes (3-5), but cooled off some after that, balancing two more birdies against a bogey.

South Korea's Somi Lee shook off a double bogey on the par-5 No. 12 to card a 45, good enough to put her into fifth place at 11 under.

Local fans got a special thrill as the best round of the day was turned in by Canadian amateur Aphrodite Deng, who went bogey free with seven birdies to record a 63.

Deng's big day propelled her into a tie for sixth place with South Korea's Soi Young Kim (64), China's Ruoning Yin (66) and American Kaiza Romero (69).

"It feels so great, and I'm so grateful for all the support," Deng said. "Every time I play this event there is like so many people out here supporting me."

LIV Golf

Michael La Saese, a 22-year-old rookie seeking his first pro victory, vaulted into a one-shot lead after 54 holes with a third-round, 4-under 66 at LIV Golf Indianapolis.

La Saese, who sits at 13 under par entering the final round, sank five birdies and an eagle to overcome a pair of bogeys at The Club at Chatham Hills in Westfield, Ind.

In his 12th start on the LIV Tour and 13th as a pro, La Saese leads by one over first-round leader Laurie Canter of England (66 on Saturday), Belgium's Thomas Detry (68), England's Richard Bland (65) and Australian Cameron Smith (67).

the 2025 NCAA individual championship. "It's enjoyable getting paired up with Wolffy (Matthew Wolff). We play a lot of golf back in Jupiter (7la.) together. When I saw we were paired up, I was pretty ecstatic about that, and he definitely brought the idea out there today, so it was good."

Coming off an impressive second-round 10-under 62 that placed him in a tie for fifth, La Saese opened the back nine with a bogey sandwiched between two birdies, then shot an eagle on the par-5 18th hole.

"There's a lot of young guys doing a lot of good stuff," La Saese said about potentially naming his first pro victory in the last event of the season. "I'm friends with pretty much all of them. I would say it definitely feels the fire."

"There's been countless guys that I played with in college that have already won professionally now, so if I could add my name to the resume, that would be pretty sweet."

Bland, 23, also seeking his first victory with LIV Golf, tied for the best round of the day while sinking seven birdies, though he did falter on the par-4 6th hole with a double bogey. Afterward, the Englishman praised the American rookie currently holding the lead.

"The youngest and the oldest, yeah," Bland said, referring to La Saese and himself. "I'm sure he'll be 10! you'll just me off the tee. He's a good kid. I've played with Michael a couple of times this year. You can see he's got a huge amount of talent. He's got a great future in front of him, wherever that future is. I'm sure he's going to be a star of the future."

Canter, 36, who has won twice on the European Tour (2024, 2025), has posted back-to-back 2-under 6th and is pleased to be in the running after a strong start to the third round, sinking two birdies in the first four holes.

"I got off to a really good start today," Canter said.

"There under on the front nine, which I think statistically is the tougher nine. Yeah, I was really happy with how I played 6 and 8. They've pretty difficult holes and get through those with a couple of good pairs and managed to pick three up... Yeah, I'm in the tournament tomorrow. Get a chance."

Bubba Watson (67), Spain's Sergio Garcia (66) and Inside Ballester (65) and South Korea's Younghun Song (65) are tied for sixth at 11 under, one shot ahead of Spain's Jon Rahm (66), Bryson De-Chambeau (67) and four others.

Second-round leader Richard T. Lee, a wild card from Canada, stumbled in the third round, shooting a 3-over 73 and tumbling into a tie for 23rd.

As for the team portion of the event, Legion XIII, captained by Rahm, holds a one-shot lead over 6 (6/3) overall, with La Saese and Scott Vincent (66) of Zimbabwe leading the way.

Despite shooting a 7-under 63 to grab the lead at the Rogers Charity Classic, Ryan Armour afterward was still dwelling on the hole that got away in Calgary.

The hole in question, the par-4, 490-yard 10th at Canyon Meadows Golf and Country Club, interested Armour into a double bogey, briefly dropping him to 5 under for the day.

But Armour rallied, sinking birdies on Nov. 27 and 10 to get back to 12 under for the tournament, a stroke ahead of the field.

"It was going nice," Armour said. "But it's golf. It's 10 holes, it's 54 holes out here. Bad things are going to happen and you've gotta adjust. You gotta make some birdies. You've gotta go out there and play well."

Multiple players posted impressive rounds on Saturday, pushing Armour to acknowledge that closing out a victory won't be easy.

"Guys shot 6la and (6) 63 today... people can come from four or five (shots) back and make a run at you, so you've got to go out and play well."

One of those 6la belonged to second-place Steven Alker of New Zealand, who was 9 under on his way to 8 under for the tournament.

Alker's day included an eagle on the par-5 18th. He added eight birdies and one bogey.

First-day leaders Richard Green of Australia and Rob LaBett of the United States are part of nine-player tie at 10 under in a tie for third place. Green, last year's champion, and LaBett matched scores for the second straight day, shooting identical 6/5.

They've joined by Zach Johnson (62 on Saturday), Bo Van Poll (62), J.J. Henry (62), Brian Gay (64), Michael Block (65), Australia's Michael Wright (64) and Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez (66).

Clark then began the back nine with birdies on four of the first five holes. His bogey on No. 18 came after his tee shot found a hooked.

McIlroy, with birdies on three of the final four holes, matched Clark's 65. Curdley, who was 3 under with a bogey-free back side, posted a 66.

"I think I needed to be patient the last three days because my game has been good in packs," McIlroy said. "But then it has been a struggle in other ways."

Yet it has been quite a turnaround in a matter of days for McIlroy, who was 66th out of 69 golfers last week in the FedEx St. Jude Championship. He had built enough season-long points to advance to the second tournament of the playoffs and he has been mostly spot-on in St. Louis.

"It's good to be in the final group, but when you (several strokes) back, that'd a lot to make up," McIlroy said. "But if I focus on myself, go out there, try to shoot a good score - I shot a 64 and a 65 this week - shoot something similar to-

morrow, you never know."

Curdley, a two-time winner of the BMW Championship (2012, 2012), is aiming for his first 2026 victory.

"I'm going to focus all my attention here this week tomorrow and whatever happens, yeah, that's what happens," Curdley said.

Gary Woodland (70), who trailed Clark by one shot when the day started, and Chris Gettinger (66) are tied for fourth at 11 under.

Collin Morikawa (67) and South Korea's Sungjun (67) are sixth and seventh at 10 under and 9 under, respectively.

"Tomorrow just go out and shoot something really, really low and if not just kind of get any momentum heading into next week and that would kind of be I would say a successful week," Morikawa said.

J.J. Spann was in third place when the round began, but his 72 left him at 8 under and tied for eighth place.

World No. 1 Scotter-Scheffler, who won last week in the FedEx St. Jude Championship, shot 68 to move to 5 under and a share of 10th place. His five birdies were partially offset by three bogeys.

Fiebich powers Liberty to win over Fever

Lesnie Fiebich returned from a seven-week injury absence to provide 20 points, five rebounds and five assists in 34 minutes, leading the host New York Liberty to a 8/9-10½ win over the Indiana Fever on Saturday night.

The teams split their season series 2-2, with the home team winning every time.

New York (23-15) is 10-3 over its past 15 games.

Indiana (24-14), which made just 11 of 22 free throws, has lost two straight games.

Besides Fiebich, New York got 19 points and 10 rebounds from Jorquet Jones, who had suffered an ankle injury in the previous Liberty game. Because Stewart added 22 points, and Sabrina Ionescu had 12 points.

For Indiana, Kelsey Mitchell scored 25 points. It was her 22nd consecutive game scoring 20 for more points, extending her NBA record.

Caitlin Clark, who entered the game tops in the league in assists and third in scoring, had 12 points and seven helpers. Allyah Boston added 22 points.

Sparks 77, Sun 68

Bar Burrell scored 20 points and Los Angeles led visiting Connecticut nearly nine-to-nine en route to a slump-sniding win.

Pegula to meet Gauff in all-American final

CINCINNATI – Jessica Pegula saw off defending champion Iga Swiatek to set up an all-American Cincinnati Open women's final against Coco Gauff, while compatriot Frances Tiafoe will take on Frenchman Arthur Fils in the men's final.

World No. 3 Pegula overcame a wobble in the second set to defeat Swiatek 7-5 4-6 6-4. Both players broke early in the opening set, before and briefly interrupted play with the score level at 1-1. Pegula resumed both purpose, breaking serve to take a 3-2 lead, and then holding to make 8-4-2.

Seventh seeded Swiatek fought back, breaking to level at 4-4 before moving ahead. However, with the set tied at 5-5, Pegula broke again to make 8-6-5 and secured the opener when the 25-year-old Pole missed a return and went an overhaul season into the net.

In the second set, six-time Grand Slam winner Swiatek upped her game, breaking in the sixth game to take a 4-2 lead. The 32-year-old American broke back to level, but the former world No. 1 sealed the set when Pegula missed a forehand return.

Pegula, who reached the final in Washington earlier this month, refused to give up when Swiatek moved 3-1 ahead in the tie-lists. She leveled at 4-4, earned the decisive break in the next game and served out the victory after two hours and 47 minutes.

To win a really tough match, She (Swiatek) is in great form. To beat someone who is such a great athlete like Iga in the semis and to make it to another KNOI final. It's awesome! Pegula said.

She will face two-time Grand Slam champion Gauff, who beat Czech Sun BeJek 6-4 6-4. Gauff proved superior in the opening set getting a 4-1 lead after breaking serve. However, BeJek managed to stay in contention and level at 4-4. Still, this wasn't enough to stop the 22-year-old American, who broke serve again before closing out the set.

In her first WTA 1000 semi-final, 20-year-old BeJek's perseverance was not enough, as Gauff broke twice in the second set and capitalized on her unforced errors to seal victory in 79 minutes.

In the men's draw, Fils beat seventh seed Flavio Coltelli 6-3 4-4 in a commanding 67-minute display to extend his winning run to five matches. The 24-year-old Italian broke first for a 2-1 lead,

but Fils responded immediately to level at 3-3 before holding for a 4-3 lead before breaking in the eighth game on the Italian medited from the baseline.

The 22-year-old Frenchman, who won the Barcelona Open in April, broke in the opening game of the second set and dictated play with sharp forelands to clinch victory, firing 22 winners and six aces. The four-time ATP Tour cham-

pion will face American Tiafoe, who beat Brandon Nakashima 7-5 6-3.

The American tradeoff met consecutive breaks before drawing level at 3-3 in the opening set, but Tiafoe held to lose in the seventh game and broke again to move 6-5 ahead before serving out the set. The 27-year-old broke Nakashima for a 3-2 lead in the second set and sealed victory by holding to love.

Canada ousts Australia with a shutout victory

Itha Hawkins hit a three-run home run and Mike Haynes struck out nine over 5/1 inning as Canada shut out Australia's best Saturday in an elimination game at the Little League Baseball World known in South Williamsport, Pa. Canada will face Panama on Monday.

Cruz Kipjan reached first on a field-or-a-throw in the first inning and advanced to third on a line-drive single by Hawks. Kipjan scored on an error by second howman Nick Robson on the play, giving Canada the only run it would need.

Hawkins' three-run homer came with two outs in the top of the sixth. Haynes did not walk a better and allowed just one hit, a leadoff infield single by Daniel Warwick in the first inning. Hikaru Kaneko took the loss after allowing one run on four hits and one walk. He struck out two.

Great Lakes 10, New England 0

Josiah Infante and Les Feltner combined on a four-inning no-hitter as Hamilton, Ohio, eliminated Bridgewater, Mass., with a run-rule victory. Infante worked 2/4 inning and struck out four before Feltner retired all

four batters he faced. New England managed only two basertuners, both on walks in the second inning, and Great Lakes retired the final eight batters of the game.

Great Lakes made the game open with seven runs in the third inning, using four walks along with lonely hitting and small ball. Feltner, who had doubled to lead off the second, added an 8/81 during the third-inning outburst.

Japan 10, Caribbean 1

Trenet Tazawa belted a two-run homer in the first inning as Tokyo, Japan announced back from its opening loss with a 8/4 victory over Santiago, Dominican Republic, representing the Caribbean Region.

Tazawa's feast gave Japan an immediate 2-0 advantage, and the offense continued to place from three-It was a sharp reversal from Japan's first game in Williamsport, where it was held without a hit in a 4-5 loss to Czeleon.

Japan's pitching staff limited the score, and Japan's one run to keep its tournament alive.
